BMW Tones Down Design Drama and Reaffirms Its Love for Sedans and Wagons

By  |

BMW is redefining its design philosophy, moving away from oversized kidney grilles and aggressive lines in favor of a more subtle, timeless, and balanced style. At the same time, the German brand confirms that sedans and wagons will remain at the core of its identity, even as SUVs continue to dominate the global market.

For the past two decades, BMW’s styling has sparked debate among enthusiasts. Models like the 4 Series and M3, with their massive kidney grilles, divided opinions across the automotive community. Now, with the arrival of the Neue Klasse platform, set to debut with the second-generation iX3, the brand is steering toward cleaner lines and proportions inspired by BMWs of the 1960s.

The iconic kidney grille will remain a hallmark, though its size and proportions will be toned down depending on the model. Oliver Heilmer, BMW’s head of design, emphasized that while high-performance M models may require larger grilles for technical reasons, core vehicles such as the i3 and iX3 will embrace a more restrained visual language.

Another key point is BMW’s decision to preserve traditional body styles. Despite the SUV boom, the company insists that sedans and Touring wagons remain essential. In fact, wagons have gained traction in markets like the United States, prompting BMW to prepare new versions of the 3 Series, 5 Series, and even high-performance plug-in hybrids such as the M5 PHEV.

The M Division is also embracing this transition. According to Adrian van Hooydonk, more restrained designs not only provide a longer-lasting style and stronger resale value, but also reinforce BMW’s long-term identity. In short, the new strategy aims to balance innovation with heritage, answering critics and proving that the brand is listening to its most loyal customers.
