Yangwang U9 Extreme: The Chinese Hypercar That Outruns Bugatti with Nearly 3,000 HP
BYD’s luxury brand Yangwang enters the hypercar elite with the U9 Extreme, setting new speed records and challenging Europe’s traditional dominance.
China Joins the Hypercar Club
For decades, the world’s fastest cars were the domain of European and American manufacturers such as Bugatti, Koenigsegg, and SSC. Now, China has made its mark. Yangwang, BYD’s luxury sub-brand, has unveiled the U9 Extreme, an electric hypercar that not only competes with established giants but has already surpassed them in performance and top speed, signaling China’s serious ambitions in high-performance automotive engineering.
A Wild, Track-Focused Design
The U9 Extreme prioritizes pure aerodynamic function over theatrical design. A massive carbon fiber front splitter, dual-channel hood, swan-neck rear wing, and dual-layer rear diffuser generate extreme downforce. Inside, the cabin is minimalistic and racing-oriented, featuring extensive carbon fiber and Alcantara, bucket seats, and a multifunction steering wheel that puts the driver firmly in a track-ready environment.
The Electric Beast That Beats Bugatti

At the heart of this hypercar is a 1,200-volt electric platform powering four motors–one per wheel–producing a combined 2,978 hp. Torque vectoring adjusts more than 100 times per second, and the DiSus-X active suspension ensures maximum grip under acceleration, braking, and cornering. With this technology, the U9 Extreme reached 308.4 mph (496.2 km/h) at the Papenburg Testing Center in Germany, shattering the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ record. It also completed the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6:59.157, a historic time for any production electric car.
A Symbol of Power and Exclusivity
With only 30 units in production, the Yangwang U9 Extreme is a limited-edition Chinese hypercar that demonstrates the country’s arrival in the elite hypercar sector. Its significance is both technological and strategic: it positions China as a serious competitor in the high-end automotive world, traditionally dominated by European brands with deep motorsport and Formula 1 expertise.
