Toyota Leaves U.S. Out: GR Corolla Software Upgrade That Adds Torque Won’t Arrive Stateside

By  |

The Japanese automaker announced a software-based performance upgrade that increases torque and refines the drivetrain system, but it will remain exclusive to Japan and won’t reach U.S. GR Corolla owners.

The program will allow Japanese owners of pre-2025 GR Corollas to match the torque of the newest versions. Beyond the power increase, it also refines the torque-splitting system, enhancing traction and delivering sharper driving dynamics.

U.S. owners won’t get the upgrade
A Toyota North America spokesperson confirmed that the software won’t be available for U.S. GR Corollas, leaving thousands of enthusiasts without the chance to bring their cars up to date. The move has sparked disappointment, especially since Japanese customers will gain access to the program starting next spring.

More tech, fewer perks?
This situation underscores a growing industry trend: manufacturers pushing software-based upgrades that often remain restricted to certain markets. Meanwhile, customers in other regions bear the cost of technology without reaping all of its benefits, stirring debate among car enthusiasts and experts alike.

An update that could’ve been positive
While some remain skeptical of software-sold performance boosts, the reality is that the GR Corolla –just like its sibling, the GR Yaris– puts heavy demands on its turbo three-cylinder engine. Toyota seems confident it’s now safe to unleash that extra torque, but sadly, U.S. drivers won’t get to experience it.
