Rare McLaren F1 From Brunei Sultan Set to Stun Collectors at $21M Auction
A 1994 McLaren F1, once part of the Sultan of Brunei’s collection and fitted with a rare high-downforce kit, is ready to hit the auction block, promising record-breaking attention.
Few cars carry as much prestige and history as this 1994 McLaren F1. Chassis number 014 originally belonged to the Sultan of Brunei before moving through a series of prominent collectors and McLaren insiders. With an estimated value exceeding $21 million, it’s one of the most sought-after F1s to ever appear at auction.
From Royal Collection to Fully Rebuilt Icon
After leaving the Sultan’s collection, the car passed through the U.K., then to David Clark, former Director of McLaren Cars, and later a New York collector. In 2006, it returned to McLaren HQ for a $500,000 restoration, receiving Ibis White paint, the ultra-rare High Downforce Kit, OZ Racing wheels, an improved exhaust, and a full LM-spec interior–upgrades shared by only eight McLaren F1s worldwide.

The car also carries a special motorsport connection, having been signed by Lewis Hamilton in 2007. These touches, combined with the rare aerodynamic package, make it one of the most unique and modified road-going F1s ever produced.
With just 13,711 miles (22,065 km), this McLaren F1 is in pristine condition. Offered alongside a Gordon Murray T.50 from the same collection, the upcoming auction will likely showcase how much collectors are willing to pay for automotive history, exclusivity, and racing heritage all in one.
