2026 Audi A5 and S5: Stylish, Capable, But Still Searching for a True Identity
Audi’s refreshed A5 and S5 try to do it all — but in chasing versatility, they might have lost some of their spark.
Audi has streamlined its compact luxury lineup, merging the once-separate A4, A5 Coupe, and A5 Sportback into a single family — the 2026 Audi A5 and its sportier sibling, the S5. The result? A pair of handsome, practical, and well-equipped four-doors aiming to blend elegance, performance, and everyday usability. But while they check nearly every box, they struggle to stand out in any single one.
A Familiar Face with Subtle Upgrades
Visually, the new A5 and S5 retain Audi’s signature sharp lines, adopting the Sportback’s sleek fastback design. Inside, there’s plenty of new tech: an 11.9-inch digital cluster, a 14.5-inch touchscreen, and even an optional 10.9-inch passenger display — all part of Audi’s latest Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture. The fit and finish remain excellent, but reviewers have noted that materials and tactile feel no longer match the brand’s peak interiors from years past.
Under the hood, the A5 packs a 268-horsepower turbo-four, while the S5 jumps to 362 horsepower from a turbocharged V6 with a mild-hybrid system. Both come standard with Quattro all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The S5’s engine is smooth and eager, though critics say it feels more like a stronger A5 than a true performance car. Meanwhile, the A5’s four-cylinder is efficient but gruff, lacking the refinement you’d expect at this price point.

Where the A5 and S5 Still Shine
Value remains one of Audi’s biggest advantages. Starting at $50,995 for the A5 and $61,545 for the S5, both undercut many rivals. Cargo space also impresses — 22.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats, outdoing BMW’s 4 Series Gran Coupe. Add top-tier safety systems and up to 36 mpg highway, and you’ve got two cars that make a compelling case for daily drivers who appreciate subtle luxury.
Verdict: Good, Not Great
Ultimately, the 2026 Audi A5 and S5 are refined, capable, and smartly priced — but they don’t move the needle. The design feels familiar, the interiors less tactile, and the performance restrained. For a brand once known for setting trends in luxury engineering, Audi’s new mid-size duo feels like it’s playing it safe instead of setting the pace.
