Hunting the Land Rover Defender for Dakar!
We explore the D7X-R prototype based on the Defender Octa, set to compete in the Stock category of the Dakar Rally.
We flew to Morocco, deep into the Sahara Desert, to witness Land Rover’s work on its Defender Rally D7X-R, a prototype closely linked to the production model. With a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine producing 635 HP and 800 Nm, all-wheel drive, and advanced suspension, this vehicle promises to tackle dunes, rocky terrain, and extreme paths with the precision of a true competition off-roader. Testing shows secure and controlled handling, thanks to active damping systems and traction modes specifically designed for sand and gravel.
The Soul of Rally Raid in a Defender
The Defender Rally D7X-R isn’t just about power—it’s also about heritage. Based on the Octa, it meets the Stock category requirements, which mandate a minimum of 1,000 units produced. This category embodies the harshest essence of Dakar, evoking legends like Stephane Peterhansel, Ari Vatanen, and Nasser Al-Attiyah. Watching the prototype navigate dunes and rugged terrain connects directly to the rally’s epic spirit, blending modern technology with adventurous heritage.
Technical Innovations That Make a Difference
The prototype features 6D Dynamics shock absorbers with active pitch and roll control, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a rear locking differential. It also includes a FIA-approved 550-liter fuel tank, challenging the vehicle’s dynamics under extreme conditions. Every element is designed to ensure maximum performance and safety, from suspension to torque management on tricky surfaces, demonstrating that a Defender can be both production-based and competition-ready.

A Unique Desert Experience
Testing the vehicle in Errachidia, amid dunes and rocks, highlights the predictability and confidence the prototype offers. The combination of air suspension, multiple driving modes, and all-wheel drive ensures the vehicle performs safely and thrillingly, even on steep descents or deep sand. Interaction with Land Rover technicians provides insights into how each adjustment affects dynamics, turning adventure into hands-on learning.
Land Rover’s Dakar Future
The Defender Rally D7X-R marks a new chapter for Land Rover in the Dakar Rally, opening the door for competition with vehicles closer to production models. In 2026, the Stock category will see Land Rover, Toyota, and other manufacturers compete in a battle of power, endurance, and strategy. This prototype represents not only technological evolution but also the brand’s legacy and the chance to dream of a competitive Dakar while preserving the legendary off-road spirit.
