2025 Honda Civic Type R: the sports car that surprises with real-world fuel efficiency

By  |

The Japanese icon proves that power and efficiency can go hand in hand. With 329 hp under the hood, the Civic Type R achieves fuel economy figures that seem almost impossible for a car of its kind.

It might sound contradictory, but the 2025 Honda Civic Type R isn’t just about high performance — it’s also a showcase of real-world efficiency for a pure petrol sports car. Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine delivering 329 hp, paired with front-wheel drive, a limited-slip differential, and a six-speed manual gearbox, the Civic Type R impressed during a 360-km test route between Rome and Forlì. It recorded an average consumption of 6.3 litres per 100 km (15.87 km/l) — remarkable numbers for such a powerful, performance-focused machine.

Performance and efficiency: a rare combination

In this test, the Civic Type R matched the fuel economy of far less powerful petrol models such as the Jeep Renegade 1.0 T3, while outperforming the Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2.0 Turbo Q4 and CUPRA Formentor VZ 310 DSG 4Drive. Although it can’t rival plug-in hybrids in outright efficiency, its results highlight Honda’s exceptional engineering balance and mechanical precision. In mixed driving, city routes, or highway cruising, fuel use remains impressively reasonable, with a potential range of up to 800 kilometres on a single 47-litre tank, provided you keep your right foot light.

A compact car with a pure racing soul

The car tested was the Honda Civic Type R Best Lap, a special edition limited to 99 units for the Italian market, priced at €63,900. This exclusive version includes a full equipment package, from 19-inch matte-black alloy wheels and a carbon-fibre exterior and interior kit, to red Alcantara sport seats. In Spain, the standard Type R starts at €58,850 — a figure well justified by its outstanding road behaviour, razor-sharp gearbox, and thrilling +R driving mode. Yet, in Comfort mode, it can transform into a surprisingly calm and versatile compact car, showing its dual character between everyday usability and track-day fun.

Convincing figures and addictive sensations

During testing, the Civic Type R consumed €33.55 in petrol while maintaining an average speed of 64 km/h. On the road, it continues to feel like a driver’s dream, thanks to its precise steering, short-throw shifter, and engaging manual control. Despite approaching the end of its production cycle, the Type R remains one of the world’s finest hot hatches, combining supercar-level performance with the fuel efficiency of an everyday vehicle.

A farewell to a legend that still leads the way

In an automotive era dominated by electrification and SUVs, the 2025 Honda Civic Type R bows out in style, reaffirming its legacy as a true icon of analogue driving. Its perfect balance of power, precision, and real-world efficiency proves that emotion and intelligent engineering can coexist. In today’s fast-changing automotive landscape, the Type R stands as a reminder that driving passion still has a place — and a powerful voice — on the road.
