Volkswagen Passat B6: 20 Years of the Sixth-Generation Classic

By  |

The Volkswagen Passat B6 celebrates its 20th anniversary, remembered for its elegance, practicality, and technological leap over previous generations.

A Bold New Look for 2005

Launched in spring 2005, the Passat B6, designed by Murat Günak, introduced a larger, sportier, and more luxurious silhouette. Its signature chromed grille and longer dimensions—9.2 cm longer and 7.4 cm wider—set it apart from its predecessors. The Passat Variant offered an impressive cargo capacity ranging from 603 to 1,731 liters, cementing its role as a practical family sedan.

Wide Range of Engines and Innovative Tech

The sixth generation brought DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission alongside traditional gearboxes, while 4MOTION all-wheel drive used a Haldex multi-plate clutch. BlueMotion variants reduced consumption with Start & Stop systems and optimized gear ratios. Engine options spanned from 105 to 170 HP in diesels and 105 to 300 HP in petrol engines, including the legendary R36 V6 3.6.

Distinctive Design Inside and Out

Externally, horizontal tail lights, extended wheelbase, and sharp side profiles defined the B6. Inside, the Passat offered climate control, adjustable seats, leather and Alcantara upholstery, and advanced infotainment features. The R36 model, introduced in 2008, added sportier touches like tinted lights and chromed trims, showcasing the performance end of the spectrum.

The Passat CC: A Coupé Variant

Also in 2008, the Passat CC debuted as a coupé-style sedan, slightly lower and wider than the standard Passat, with frameless doors and a sleek roofline. It retained an unusually large 532-liter trunk for a coupe, blending style and practicality, aiming to compete with the Mercedes-Benz CLS.

From B6 to B7: Evolution Continues

Produced between February 2005 and July 2010 in Emden and Zwickau, the B6 laid the groundwork for the B7, which launched at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. While visually and technologically similar, the Passat B7 refined the formula before eventually giving way to the B8 in 2015, continuing Volkswagen’s legacy of practical, stylish, and reliable sedans.
