Toyota GR GT3: A Pure V8 Biturbo with Extreme Aerodynamics and a 2027 Debut Date

By  |

This prototype, featuring extensively worked aerodynamic design, has been engineered as the direct successor to the veteran Lexus RC F GT3.

Toyota Gazoo Racing not only showcased the new GR GT road car but also this exclusive prototype for racing circuits. Replacing the Lexus RC F GT3, a model already boasting a decade of track history, was more than necessary. Thus, the Toyota GR GT3 takes on that successor role. However, the Gazoo Racing division will not put it on the tracks until “around 2027.” The race model is directly derived from the GR GT production model itself.

Pure V8 Heart and Spectacular Exhaust

The new model exhibits some notable differences compared to the road car. For example, the racing machine dispenses with the electric motor integrated into the transmission of the road-legal version. Therefore, the GT3 is powered exclusively by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. This promises purist performance on the track. Additionally, the car eliminates the GR GT’s quadruple exhaust outlets. Instead, it utilizes a more spectacular side exit configuration, reminiscent of its predecessor’s style.

Aggressive Aerodynamics and Drastic Weight Reduction

The GR GT3 adopts a body that is much more aerodynamically developed. It integrates a huge rear wing and numerous appendices. The air becomes a key ally thanks to these ‘holes’ and additions. Compared to the road car, the GR GT3 is slightly longer, wider, and lower. It measures 4.79 meters long, 2.05 meters wide, and just 1.09 meters high. The Japanese brand seeks for the GT3 to be much lighter. Consequently, it removes the electric motor and many components from the cabin.

Regulated Power and Specialized Components

The curb weight of the street-legal version is estimated at 1,750 kilograms or less. As a result of component removal, the GT3 must approach the 1,250 kg base mass of the Lexus RC F GT3. Toyota has not confirmed the final power output. However, this aspect will ultimately depend on GT3 class regulations. In the street car, engineers aim for a minimum of 650 hp. Finally, the track model incorporates center-lock wheels for lightning-fast tire changes. It also uses carbon-ceramic brake discs from the specialist Brembo.

Towards the 2027 Debut and Prototype Status

The venerable Lexus RC F GT3 will compete for at least one more season. This is happening because the car will not be ready until 2027 at the earliest. The concept was first shown in January 2022. Consequently, the new track machine has been a long time coming. The actual product looks significantly more extreme than the show car from four years ago. Toyota has officially designated the GR GT3 as a “prototype in development.” This status means that some technical and visual details may change once it is completely ready to compete.
