Lexus LFA Concept: The Icon Returns in Electric Format and with Lightweight Chassis Shared with the Toyota GR GT3

By  |

Lexus has revived its legendary LFA badge with a new, fully electric prototype, ending years of requests from fans. Although the absence of the V10 engine is disappointing, the concept debuts a high-rigidity aluminum chassis.

The original Lexus LFA was like a shooting star. Its production lasted only two years. Barely 500 units were manufactured worldwide. Since 2012, fans have begged Lexus for its return. This is the new LFA Concept. It is the first Lexus to wear the LFA badge since 2012. However, it is not ready for production.

We are sad to report that there is no screaming V10 block. There is also no Yamaha soundtrack. We only find batteries under the hood. The new LFA Concept turns out to be fully electric. In fact, Lexus does not even dare to give details about the performance. It also does not disclose the battery configuration.

Growing Dimensions and New Architecture

Leaving aside the marketing jargon, we can deduce important data. The LFA prototype is based on a new lightweight aluminum chassis. This chassis features high rigidity. It is the same chassis that debuted on the Toyota GR GT and GR GT3 race cars. Only the Toyota model carries a hybrid twin-turbo V8 engine.

The LFA Concept turns out to be about 25 centimeters longer than its predecessor. It is also more than 15 centimeters wider. In terms of size, the concept measures 4,690 millimeters long. Its width reaches 2,040 mm. It features a wheelbase of 2,725 mm.

Evolved Design and Aggressive Cockpit

Visually, the new LFA is almost identical to the Sport Concept. This was presented earlier this year in Monterey. The body panels are basically the same. Some small touch-ups are noticeable. These make it look more production-ready. The new LFA Concept will not deviate much from this final design.

Lexus offers us an in-depth look at the cabin. The interior presents a cockpit-type design. It has aggressive details that wrap around the driver. Instead of a tactile instrument panel, there is a set of screens. Curiously, it lacks a central infotainment screen.

Unknowns About the Future and Production

There are still many things we do not know about the appearance of the production version. It has also not been announced when it will appear. Nevertheless, this prototype gives us a good idea of what is coming. The future LFA will materialize with batteries. It will come with much more technology than is currently known.
