The New Mercedes-AMG GLC Could Have More Than 900 HP and Rival the Electric Porsche Cayenne Turbo

Mercedes-AMG is preparing a high-performance version of the all-electric GLC SUV, which will nearly double the power of the standard model.

Mercedes-Benz revealed the electric GLC a few months ago, a model that can produce up to 483 horsepower. However, reports indicate that the AMG version will far exceed that figure. Unnamed sources have told Autocar that AMG wants the GLC to sprint from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in under three seconds. The SUV will allegedly have three axial-flux motors: one in the front and two in the rear. Combined, these motors will produce over 900 horsepower. The governed top speed will be 155 mph (250 km/h).

AMG.EA Architecture and Battery Thermal Management

The AMG version will utilize the AMG Electric Architecture (AMG.EA). Mercedes-AMG previewed this architecture with the GT XX Concept. This is a 1,340 horsepower, 223 mph super sedan revealed earlier this year.

The battery will be a key to the car’s performance. In fact, it will use cylindrical cells rather than prismatic ones and feature direct cooling. Therefore, the coolant will flow directly around each cylinder, a factor needed for the SUV to sustain a consistent high-performance output. The electric AMG GLC will likely serve as a direct rival to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, which should deliver similar power and capabilities.

Emulated Driving Experience

When the AMG GLC does arrive, it will attempt to recreate the sounds and feelings of a combustion-powered car, much like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. The GLC will also feature fake gearshifts and simulated sounds. On the other hand, the high-performance GLC should feature an assortment of AMG-specific visual upgrades. This will include unique fascias and active aerodynamics on the exterior. Meanwhile, the inside will have sport seats and AMG touches throughout the cabin.

A Crucial Year for AMG

Next year will be vital for Mercedes-AMG. The GT XX Concept previews a new performance sedan for the company. Subsequently, the automaker will follow up with this SUV. Mercedes-AMG previewed it last December. Furthermore, another SUV from the automaker might have over 1,000 horsepower when it arrives.
