The Hyundai Crater Concept Redefines the SUV Segment: An Extreme Off-Road Vision

By  |

Hyundai is presenting the Crater concept in Los Angeles, signaling a shift toward much more serious off-road capability than its current XRT models.

The so-called “off-road cosplay” dominates the automotive sector. Many manufacturers only add chunkier fenders and mediocre tires to simulate robustness. However, Hyundai seeks to raise the bar with the Crater concept. The automaker will unveil the new prototype in Los Angeles this week, marking the next step beyond its XRT-badged products. In fact, Hyundai states the Crater amplifies the same spirit and robustness found in XRT production vehicles.

The Evolution of the XRT Line

The XRT product line currently only attempts to look like a toughened-up and off-road-ready machine. In reality, XRT products are better suited for graded fire roads or routes to ski resort cabins. For instance, the Ioniq 5 XRT delivers truly entertaining driving dynamics in off-pavement environments. Nevertheless, the XRT division’s advertising efforts serve up a more exciting vision than their actual capability. Clearly, the Crater Concept aims to change this situation.

Design and Technology Focused on Adventure

The new Crater Concept features very aggressive lighting elements. In addition, we observe front and rear fascias designed to improve approach and departure angles. Consequently, the vehicle boasts real, actual ground clearance. A fascinating detail is the possibility that this concept could arrive packing portal axles, although this remains a dusty-road-loving off-road fan’s dream.

While the idea of portal axles in a production Hyundai vehicle seems distant, the future could be electric. Consequently, the brand could equip an EV setup with a quad-motor system, offering precise control. A vehicle like this isn’t a surprise for Hyundai. In fact, its sister brand Genesis appears set to bring the X Gran Equator to market in some form. Then, Hyundai would have a clear path to bring a less-luxe version to market. Therefore, the Crater Concept appears to be a preview of precisely that vehicle.
