Mitsubishi 2026: The SUV Lineup is Renewed with a Renault Base and the Anticipated Return of the Montero
Mitsubishi is preparing for a significant remodeling of its range in 2026, focusing once again on SUVs.
The Japanese brand has adopted the strategy previously seen with the Colt and ASX models. Specifically, the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 2026 entirely takes the platform, powertrain, and interior from the Renault Scenic. This new Japanese SUV measures 4.47 meters in length, exactly the same as its French counterpart. The exterior design is rather square and features a completely redesigned front end, with ‘L’-shaped daytime running lights and horizontal light clusters. Inside, it reflects the same approach as the Scenic, with digital instrumentation and a vertical central monitor.
Initially, the new Eclipse Cross will be available in the Long Range version. This version carries an electric motor of 160 kW (218 HP) and an 87 kWh battery. Its declared range is 600 km. A less powerful version is expected to arrive later.
Grandis: Compact SUV of Symbioz Origin
Another model that will use Renault DNA is the Mitsubishi Grandis, which is derived from the Symbioz. This vehicle will be a compact SUV 4.41 meters long. To differentiate itself from its French cousin, the Grandis completely redesigns the front, adopting the style of the Colt. However, the general lines and the interior come from the Symbioz. The infotainment system uses a vertical central monitor cantilevered over the dashboard.
Two powertrains are planned for this model. One is the 1.3 mild hybrid with 140 HP, and the other, the 1.0 full hybrid with 160 HP. Both systems will be paired exclusively with front-wheel drive.
New Outlander PHEV: Debut in Late 2025
The new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV could debut in the lineup in late 2025. This is a plug-in mid-size SUV that has been completely redesigned and measures 4.71 meters in length. The exterior design exhibits massive and square shapes that evoke the off-road world. The front is typical of the brand, characterized by thin light clusters and two boomerangs embracing the headlights.
As its name suggests, the new Outlander is propelled by a plug-in powertrain. The system consists of two electric motors and a thermal engine, generating a total of 302 HP. Furthermore, the power unit integrates a battery pack of 22.7 kWh gross. These batteries provide an electric-mode range of approximately 86 km. The propulsion system can operate in three modes: pure electric, series hybrid, or parallel hybrid.

The Possible Return of the Mitsubishi Montero
The potential return of the Mitsubishi Montero is perhaps the most fascinating and least known piece of news. There has never been official confirmation of its comeback. However, in Japan, it is taken for granted that production will take place in 2026. A clue to its style could be the Elevance Concept. This is a large SUV with a six-seater (2+2+2) interior.
Its powertrain is particularly interesting. It is a plug-in hybrid with four electric motors (two in the front and two in the rear) and a thermal engine. The thermal engine also has the capacity to run on carbon-neutral fuels. The company indicates that this system is perfect for off-road use.
