The Future of the Toyota GR Corolla: Is the Three-Cylinder Saying Goodbye?
The iconic GR Corolla could get a more powerful engine, leaving behind its signature three-cylinder.

The Toyota GR Corolla has earned a special place in the hearts of performance hatchback enthusiasts. With its 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower, it perfectly balances fun behind the wheel and urban practicality. However, this distinctive three-cylinder may soon be replaced as Toyota prepares new engine developments.
A Look at the Engine’s Future
With the debut of the new Corolla concept in Japan, Toyota unveiled a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine reportedly capable of delivering around 400 horsepower. This engine is said to be simpler and more powerful than the current three-cylinder, suggesting that the next-generation GR Corolla could adopt this new powertrain.
Speaking with MotorTrend, Chief Technology Officer Hiroki Nakajima hinted that this engine could be integrated into future high-performance models. While he did not confirm whether the next GR Corolla will feature it, the signs are clear. Still, Nakajima reassured enthusiasts that internal combustion engines are here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future.
GR Corolla chief engineer Naoyuki Sakamoto acknowledged that the team “knows the limits” of the current three-cylinder engine and that extensive engineering was required to boost power for the automatic model. Transitioning to a more powerful and simpler four-cylinder engine makes long-term sense and could place the next GR Corolla ahead of competitors like the Honda Civic Type R (315 hp) and Volkswagen Golf R (328 hp).
Meanwhile, buyers can pick up the 2026 GR Corolla starting at $41,080, including destination charges. While the current three-cylinder will continue to delight enthusiasts for a few more years, the future points to a more powerful and efficient GR Corolla, preserving the sporty essence that has made it a standout in its segment.
