INTELLIGENT MOBILITY
Omoda & JAECOO Revolutionize Combustion: New Petrol Engine Achieves 48% Efficiency
The Asian brand from the Chery Group stuns the automotive world with a next-generation combustion engine that redefines sustainability in the electric era.
While the automotive industry races toward full electrification, Omoda & JAECOO is also looking in another direction: the extreme optimization of internal combustion engines. During the 2025 International User Summit, the brand unveiled an ambitious project aiming to reach a thermal efficiency of 48%, a figure only the world’s most advanced manufacturers have ever come close to achieving.
Far from contradicting its electric strategy, the Chinese group maintains that hybrid technology remains the most realistic path to reducing global fuel consumption and emissions in the coming decade. In fact, every percentage point gained in efficiency directly translates to a tangible impact: a 1% improvement equals a 2.5% reduction in fuel use, delivering immediate environmental benefits.
Engineering That Pushes the Boundaries of Physics
The 48% target represents a monumental technological leap, considering that today’s most advanced combustion engines operate between 38% and 45% efficiency. To achieve this, Chery Group’s R&D team has developed groundbreaking solutions such as an ultra-high compression ratio of 26:1, triple-link hyperbolic crankshafts, 35% exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), and advanced ceramic thermal insulation coatings. These combined innovations drastically reduce heat losses and maximize the energy yield from each drop of fuel, paving the way for a new generation of electrified thermal hybrid engines that are cleaner, more efficient, and more durable.

Hybrid Present: Already Achieving 44.5% Efficiency
At the summit, Omoda & JAECOO didn’t just share their vision of the future—they showcased real progress. Their current SHS (Super Hybrid System), featuring a 1.5 TDGI Miller-cycle engine, dual electric motors, and an intelligent DHT transmission, already achieves 44.5% thermal efficiency with an average fuel consumption of just 6 litres per 100 km. The system automatically manages driving modes according to speed, load, and terrain, ensuring the perfect balance between performance and efficiency. Moreover, the hybrid battery pack offers up to 90 km of pure electric range, withstands extreme temperatures, and cuts power within just 2 milliseconds in the event of a collision, enhancing the vehicle’s active safety.
A Dual Vision of Sustainability
Omoda & JAECOO’s strategy makes one thing clear: sustainability isn’t exclusive to electric power, and combustion engines still have a vital role to play. With this breakthrough, the brand not only strengthens its technological leadership but also reaffirms its commitment to intelligent, diversified, and responsible mobility—proving that efficiency and driving passion can coexist.
