Lexus May Retire Its F Performance Cars – But the Future Is Just a Button Away
The iconic F badge could evolve from high-performance hardware to software-defined driving modes in upcoming Lexus hybrids and EVs.
Lexus may be ready to retire its standalone F performance division, at least temporarily. Historically, models like the RC F and the LFA proved that Lexus could rival BMW M and Mercedes-AMG, blending emotion, fun, and precision. However, according to Lexus President Takashi Watanabe, the brand is exploring new ways to deliver performance that go beyond traditional hardware. This could mean replacing dedicated F cars with software-driven driving modes in future electric and hybrid vehicles.
Performance by Software, Not Just Hardware
The recent Japan Mobility Show offered hints of this shift toward software-defined vehicles (SDVs). Lexus showcased a concept featuring a six-wheel LS minivan, whose steering wheel included a simple ‘F’ button. Watanabe explained that, while traditional F cars were defined by suspension components, shock absorbers, and springs, the new approach focuses on delivering excitement and sportiness through advanced software. In other words, the thrill of F could come from algorithms rather than purely mechanical engineering.
Keeping the Spirit Alive
Despite these changes, Lexus is committed to retaining the fun-to-drive and emotional essence of F cars. Watanabe emphasized that performance will still be a priority, even if the method evolves. The F badge might appear in future high-performance models, such as the upcoming LFR supercar, but the brand will not be constrained by previous definitions of what an F car should be. This approach gives Lexus flexibility to innovate while honoring the legacy of its performance heritage.

A Button That Redefines Sportiness
The steering-wheel F button symbolizes a radical evolution for the brand. Rather than relying solely on hardware upgrades, the driving experience can now be tailored through software adjustments, adapting to different drivers and environments instantly. This evolution aligns with the rise of electric and hybrid platforms, where vehicle dynamics can be tuned digitally. It represents a fusion of tradition and modern technology, keeping the F DNA alive while embracing innovation.
Looking Forward
Lexus’ future may see F cars reimagined as part of a broader spectrum of driving experiences. While hardware-based performance remains iconic, software-defined modes allow greater creativity, sustainability, and accessibility. The transition highlights Lexus’ commitment to cutting-edge technology without sacrificing the brand’s sporty, emotional identity. For enthusiasts, the roar of the past may evolve into the precise click of
