Kia Considers Producing the New Tasman Pick-up in Uruguay for Regional Demand

By  |

Although the model will initially be imported from South Korea, the brand seeks to convert the local infrastructure into a production hub to supply the South American market.

The local production initiative is part of an internal study that Kia is conducting jointly with the Uruguayan group Nordex. This group is currently responsible for the assembly of the K2500 model. This alliance would allow the brand to take advantage of the existing industrial infrastructure in the country. Consequently, Uruguay could become a regional production center for the brand.

Gustavo Gandini, Kia’s operations director in Brazil, was the one who spoke about the possibilities of producing these models in the eastern country. However, the possibility is not yet officially confirmed. The final decision hinges on a crucial factor: the projected sales volume for the Tasman in South America. The size of that market will be decisive in determining whether local production is economically viable.

Global Launch and Mechanical Proposal

While the regional evaluation is being resolved, the launch of the pick-up is already underway. The brand confirmed that the first units will arrive imported directly from South Korea. The Tasman represents Kia’s entry into one of the most competitive market segments.

The model arrives with a mechanical proposal aligned with the region’s demands. It will be available with two engine options. The first is a 2.4 TGDI gasoline engine that delivers 281 CV of power. The second is a 2.2 CRDi diesel with 210 CV. This latter engine is considered by the brand itself as the most suitable for South America. Both engines can be paired with a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. In addition, they incorporate a 4×4 system with a low-range gear.

Regional Competitive Advantages

Producing the Tasman in Uruguay would mean a fundamental strategic advantage for Kia. This would allow the brand to reduce logistical costs. It would also increase its competitiveness against rivals already manufactured in the region. Finally, it would ensure a more stable supply for the main South American markets. The project is still in the analysis stage. Nevertheless, it indicates a clear interest from the automaker in strengthening its presence in the pick-up world. The initiative also seeks to expand Kia’s industrial prominence in South America.
