Audi prepares a radical off-roader to dethrone the Mercedes G-Class

The German brand is developing a pure 4×4 that promises to revolutionize the segment and take on the icons from Mercedes and Land Rover.

Audi wants an off-roader that makes history

It’s been nearly three years since Audi first hinted at creating an off-roader capable of challenging the legendary Mercedes-Benz G-Class, but now the four-ring brand seems to be taking things seriously. According to CEO Gernot Döllner, the project is far from abandoned. In a recent interview with Autocar, he confirmed that he “won’t give up on that dream.”

A strategy focused on niche models and cutting-edge tech

Döllner also emphasized that simplifying Audi’s lineup doesn’t mean giving up on image-building projects—quite the opposite. “It works perfectly to have a range focused on the core, while also offering a few niche models to build brand image and transfer new ideas into mainstream products,” he explained. This approach would allow Audi to explore new technologies while reinforcing its premium identity, merging innovation with design and performance.

A direct rival to the G-Class and the Defender

This upcoming off-roader would serve as a flagship model for the brand, aiming to take on both the Mercedes G-Class and the Land Rover Defender, two undisputed benchmarks in the segment. Furthermore, it would act as a testbed for Audi’s future electric technologies and advanced traction systems, establishing the brand as a serious player beyond the tarmac.

A different kind of 4×4: power, luxury, and electrification

According to Audi’s Head of Design, Marc Lichte, the new 4×4 won’t resemble either the G-Class or the Defender—it will be “something more.” All signs point to a fully electric model, combining rugged looks with the refined elegance typical of Ingolstadt. Some rumors even suggest it could be based on the Scout brand, aimed primarily at the U.S. market.

Audi eyes the U.S. and the electric future

The key question now is whether Audi will build this off-roader in a dedicated U.S. factory, a decision that, according to Döllner, depends on how the company aligns with American government policies. In any case, the project is clearly on the radar and promises a revolution in the world of premium electric 4x4s. Meanwhile, Audi continues to work on the much-anticipated Q9, which will soon go head-to-head with the BMW X7 and the Mercedes-Benz GLS.
