Mercedes Solves Its Biggest F1 Problem After Four Seasons
Mercedes has finally solved the simulation and track correlation issues that limited its performance during the ground-effect era, helping the team dominate the opening half of 2026.
Mercedes has returned to the top of Formula 1 in 2026. For the first time since 2021, the team leads both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships.
That turnaround comes after four difficult seasons under the previous ground-effect regulations. During that period, Mercedes occasionally showed strong pace, but the team never developed a car capable of fighting for wins consistently.
The new W17 has changed that pattern. Mercedes won eight of the first 11 races and placed at least one driver on the podium at every Grand Prix before the summer break.
Mercedes finally fixed its correlation problem
One of the biggest issues during the previous regulations was the gap between what Mercedes expected from its simulations and what the car actually delivered on track.
That made development more difficult. Engineers could identify potential improvements in simulation, but those gains did not always appear once the car reached the circuit.

Mercedes has improved the connection between its simulations and real-world track performance under the 2026 regulations.
According to Mercedes deputy team principal Bradley Lord, the team spent a huge amount of effort analyzing those weaknesses before the new regulations arrived.
The objective was clear: improve simulation tools, understand how the car would behave, and identify the most important challenges before they became major problems.
Lord says those lessons from the ground-effect era became an important part of Mercedes’ preparation for 2026.
Closer work between the chassis and power-unit teams
Mercedes also changed the way its technical departments worked together.
The chassis and power-unit groups developed a much closer relationship, allowing engineers to evaluate the new car as a complete package rather than as separate systems.

Mercedes strengthened cooperation between its chassis and power-unit departments during development of the W17.
Lord explained that the team developed new tools capable of simulating the car’s behavior more accurately. That allowed Mercedes to identify fundamental weaknesses earlier and respond with targeted solutions.
He also credited James Allison and the wider technical team, as well as the operations department responsible for turning development ideas into track-ready components as quickly as possible.
That combination has become one of the major strengths of Mercedes’ 2026 program.
Better tools have produced better development
Mercedes’ advantage is not only about having stronger simulations. The team has also improved how efficiently it converts those simulations into actual performance.

Mercedes has focused on turning simulation data into track performance while maximizing its budget under the cost cap.
Under Formula 1’s budget cap, every development decision matters. Teams cannot simply spend their way out of a problem.
Lord says Mercedes has continued working on how to use its financial resources more efficiently, with the ultimate goal of turning every available resource into additional lap time.
The results are already visible.
After 11 races, Mercedes holds a 72-point advantage over Ferrari in the constructors’ championship. In the drivers’ standings, Andrea Kimi Antonelli leads Lewis Hamilton by 50 points.
The lessons from four difficult years
Mercedes’ current success is therefore more than a simple regulation change. The team appears to have learned from the problems that prevented it from becoming a consistent title contender between 2022 and 2025.
The biggest improvement has been the ability to understand the car before it reaches the track and then ensure that development gains translate into real performance.
That stronger Mercedes F1 2026 correlation has helped the W17 become a consistently competitive machine rather than a car that only works at certain circuits.
After four seasons of frustration, Mercedes now appears to have solved one of the most important technical weaknesses of the ground-effect era. The early results suggest that lesson could be the foundation of another championship-winning cycle.

Ferrari Admits It Still Lacks “Pure Power” Against Mercedes
Fred Vasseur says Ferrari’s second engine upgrade has not closed the gap to Mercedes, with outright power still the Scuderia’s biggest weakness.
Ferrari’s latest engine upgrade has improved its performance, but it has not been enough to close the gap to Mercedes.
Team principal Fred Vasseur admits the Scuderia still lacks outright engine power, particularly at circuits such as Monza where straight-line performance is crucial.
Ferrari Could Not Match Mercedes Power
Ferrari introduced its second ADUO power-unit upgrade at Monza after the first update debuted in Austria.
However, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton qualified only fourth and fifth, while Ferrari-powered Haas driver Oliver Bearman was around 5.6 km/h slower in top speed than the Mercedes benchmark.

Ferrari introduced its second ADUO engine upgrade at Monza but remained behind Mercedes on straight-line performance.
Vasseur said Ferrari never expected the upgrades to completely eliminate the deficit.
The goal was instead to make smaller gains, with even a few additional horsepower potentially making a difference in an extremely competitive midfield.
Energy Deployment Is Not the Main Problem
Ferrari has experimented with electrical energy deployment to compensate for its lack of combustion power.
But Vasseur insists that this is not the fundamental issue.

Ferrari has used energy deployment strategies to offset some of its engine deficit, but Vasseur says the underlying issue is outright power.
According to Vasseur, moving energy around the lap only creates a trade-off elsewhere.
The real problem, he says, is simply not having enough pure power.
That deficit becomes even more visible at Monza because of the circuit’s long straights.
Budget Cap Makes Engine Development Difficult
Vasseur also highlighted the difficulty of developing a Formula 1 engine under the cost cap.
Engine components require long lead times, meaning a manufacturer cannot simply make a rapid technical change and immediately produce new power units.

Ferrari says the F1 cost cap and long component lead times make rapid engine development particularly difficult.
Ferrari therefore chose to make smaller improvements with its ADUO opportunities rather than expecting either upgrade to transform its position against Mercedes.
The team is now looking ahead to 2027, when Ferrari will have another opportunity to improve its power unit.
For Ferrari engine power, the conclusion from Monza is clear: the Scuderia has made progress, but Mercedes remains ahead where it matters most.
Ferrari’s constructors’ championship deficit has also grown from 87 to 122 points, while Hamilton now trails in the drivers’ standings by 76 points.

Monza Turned F1 Into an Oval-Style Slipstream Battle
The Italian Grand Prix delivered the most extreme example yet of F1’s 2026 “yo-yo” racing, with drivers trapped in groups by slipstream and battery management.
The Monza F1 2026 race may be remembered as the clearest example yet of how the new regulations are changing the way Grand Prix races unfold.
The combination of huge slipstream effects and limited electrical energy created a race where drivers could overtake easily, but then struggled to pull away.
Cars Became Trapped in Groups
The phenomenon has been dubbed “yo-yo racing.”
A driver can use extra battery power to make an overtaking move, only to lose that position again on the next straight after running out of energy.

Drivers repeatedly exchanged positions at Monza because battery deployment and the slipstream made it difficult to escape.
Max Verstappen experienced the problem directly.
Despite lacking the engine performance to seriously challenge Mercedes, the Red Bull driver was able to remain close to George Russell because the powerful tow reduced the advantage of the Mercedes.
Verstappen said defending became extremely difficult once another driver had access to the overtaking boost.
Even Faster Cars Struggled to Escape
The same pattern affected several other groups.
Oscar Piastri and Lewis Hamilton formed one battle, while Lando Norris and Pierre Gasly found themselves locked together.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella noted that the regulations make it particularly difficult for a faster car to complete an overtake and then immediately pull away.

McLaren and Ferrari both struggled to create gaps because the slipstream and battery deployment neutralized some pace differences.
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur described the main problem as straight-line speed and overtaking.
His drivers could use their battery to attack another car, but doing so left them vulnerable on the following straight.
The Slipstream Could Be Worth Half a Second
According to Stella, the combined effect of the slipstream and battery deployment could create a difference of up to half a second per lap.
A car behind could force the driver ahead to spend additional electrical energy defending, which then affected the next section of the lap.

Battery deployment became one of the most important strategic factors at the Italian Grand Prix.
That made energy management the dominant issue for drivers and engineers throughout the weekend.
Stella described Monza as one of the busiest races of the year from a strategic perspective because teams had to constantly optimize both setup and energy usage.
Antonelli Was the Exception
There was one major exception to the group-racing pattern.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli started from 19th and eventually won the race, breaking away from the traffic after an impressive early recovery.
He reached sixth after the lap-six restart before the later strategy allowed him to fight for the victory.
For the Monza F1 2026 weekend, that combination of slipstream, battery management, and overtaking could make the Italian Grand Prix one of the defining races of the new technical era.

Honda Promises a “Big Step” for 2027
Honda expects a major power-unit upgrade for Aston Martin in 2027, but admits it may still not be enough to fully close the gap to its rivals.
Honda knows it still has ground to recover.
After a difficult Italian Grand Prix at Monza, the Japanese manufacturer confirmed that its next major engine development is being targeted for the start of the 2027 season.
Honda Admits the Gap Remains
Honda chief engineer Shintaro Orihara says the manufacturer has a clear development roadmap and knows where it currently stands compared with its rivals.
The next major step is planned for the opening race of 2027.

Honda plans a major power-unit development for Aston Martin ahead of the 2027 Formula 1 season.
However, Honda is refusing to guarantee that the upgrade will completely close the gap.
Orihara admitted that reaching the level of the leading manufacturers by the first race of next season will be difficult.
No Major Honda Upgrade Left for 2026
Honda also confirmed that there will be no further major power-unit development during the rest of 2026.
The manufacturer will instead concentrate on calibration work and drivability improvements.

Honda will focus on optimizing its existing power unit for the remainder of the 2026 season.
The latest development introduced at Zandvoort focused on the internal-combustion engine and delivered additional performance, but also created unexpected drivability problems.
Honda subsequently introduced new calibrations and countermeasures at Monza after positive results in testing at Sakura.
Monza Exposed Aston Martin’s Weaknesses
Monza highlighted the areas where Honda still needs to improve.
Fernando Alonso pointed to engine performance, straight-line speed, and acceleration among Aston Martin’s biggest problems during the weekend.

Honda knows where it wants to go. The question is whether its next major step will be enough to get there.
