A Symbol of Resilience Reborn: Volkswagen Restores the Van that Survived the California Fire
An iconic VW van has been completely restored by Volkswagen and debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
The blue VW van became an unexpected symbol of resilience. The image went viral in January, after an Associated Press photographer captured it during the deadly Palisades fire. The vehicle appeared surprisingly intact. The photographer, Mark J. Terrill, captured this blue and white point among the charred remnants of a Malibu neighborhood.
The Rescue and Restoration of “Azul”
Volkswagen saw the AP story and immediately contacted the owner, Megan Weinraub. The 1977 Type 2 Microbus was nicknamed “Azul”. VW technicians inspected the vehicle. They discovered damage to the paint, rust, and a broken window from the heat, despite its apparent survival.
The restoration brought people together again. The technicians consulted the VW enthusiast community. This collaboration was a shared mission to revive the vehicle. The owner, Weinraub, stated that Volkswagen’s intervention was a great relief. She and the previous owner, Preston Martin, cannot believe the van they gave up for lost is now ready for another surf adventure.

Back to Its Former Glory
Volkswagen transported the van to its facility in Oxnard, west of Los Angeles. Technicians Gunnar Wynarski and Farlan Robertson worked on the restoration. They searched for hard-to-find parts. In addition, they contacted many people and showed great creativity.
Robertson commented that the goal of the restoration was to improve the vehicle without changing it. Therefore, they aimed for it to emerge as the revived vehicle, returned to its former glory. The vehicle made its public debut this week, looking bright and new.
