2022 Toyota Tundra 1974 CrewMax Packs More Features In The Same Package
The Toyota Tundra received a much need redesign last year, but the size has remained the same. This year, though, the automaker has introduced the SR5 trims and the SX appearance package, which has a dark grey design with blacks thrown in for a touch of class.
While the exterior design, look and feel have vastly remained the same with the 2022 Toyota Tundra 1974 CrewMax, it has a slightly higher starting price than the outgoing models. While we’ve always been fans of the Tundra, the 1974 CrewMax is one of our favorite trims, complete with a 5.5’ Bed 3.45L. So, the question is, does the 2022 model do enough to warrant an upgrade?
Engine and Performance
Toyota is known for making slight changes to the Tundra under the hood, much of which isn’t discussed much. This time it is offered with a V6 turbo mated with a 10-speed auto. The specs look similar to last year’s version on paper, but what’s changed this year is the rear suspension, which, if you remember, used to be a leaf-spring setup. Now the Tundra comes with coil-spring rear suspension, which helps improve the handling and ride characteristics of the vehicle.
In addition to the CrewMax, there are the TRD Off-Road and TRD Sport packages, which we’ve not gotten on our hands yet, but expect performance to be pretty much similar except for the 20-inch wheels and a lifted suspension.
Payload and Towing Capacity
The Tundra continues to be a workhorse, capable of towing 12000 lbs of weight, slightly less than other full-sized trucks like the F-150. But to be fair, the Tundra also has a 1940 lbs payload capacity.
Interior Look and Feel With Cargo Capacity
Step inside the Tundra, and you’re greeted with a chunky dashboard lined with air vents and a thick and smooth centre section connecting to the door panels. Run your hand across the dash and the doors, you’ll notice that it is the same material as the outgoing model but slightly nicer.
As expected, the quality increases as you go up the trim level. For instance, the top-of-the-line 2022 Toyota Tundra 1974 CrewMax comes with sexy wood accents. However, all models come with a truly versatile center console, with a huge center bin and cubby storage. There are also a pair of analog gauges and a small display that shows all the standard information, along with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.
There are two body styles and three various cargo bed lengths. You have the extended cab, also called Double Cab, and the one we had, called the CrewMax, with a 6.5-foot bed.
Safety Features
Every Tundra comes fully stocked with driver-assistance technology, which includes blind spot monitoring, automatic high beams, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Also standard is collision warning and automated emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning are also standard with the CrewMax.
Final Word
The 2022 Toyota Tundra 1974 CrewMax, continues to be the same reliable, familiar workhorse we’ve all grown to love. However, it has received a few improvements that may make it worth the upgrade, especially for whom this vehicle is a daily driver.
