Why BYD Still Can’t Match Tesla’s Quality: The Largest Recall in Its History Reveals the Gap

By  |

BYD has surpassed Tesla in sales volume, leveraging more affordable prices and safe LFP batteries. However, a recent recall campaign affecting over 115,000 vehicles in China highlights that the brand still faces design and reliability challenges that separate it from Tesla’s established quality.

BYD has positioned itself as a direct competitor to Tesla, even surpassing it in global electric vehicle sales volume. Nonetheless, the consensus among automotive experts suggests this advantage is based primarily on the more accessible price of its models, not on quality parity. Tesla remains the leader in crucial areas such as performance and acceleration, software innovation (Autopilot), and its robust Supercharger network.

The Reliability Challenge: 115,000 Cars Called Back

The true test of BYD’s quality emerged recently in China with the launch of the largest recall campaign in its history. This action affects over 115,000 vehicles and exposes design flaws and safety concerns related to the battery. Two key models have been impacted by these issues:

  • BYD Tang (Plug-in Hybrid): Approximately 44,535 units manufactured between 2015 and 2017 were recalled. The issue stems from a defective traction motor controller that can cause circuit board corrosion and subsequent loss of electric power. Owners will receive a free software update to address the fault.
  • BYD Yuan Pro (Electric): This recall affects nearly 71,248 units produced between 2021 and 2022. The failure involves a defective battery seal installation, potentially allowing water ingress into the high-voltage battery under certain conditions, such as driving through flooded areas. The fix involves applying a new sealant to reinforce the battery casing’s waterproofing. Although this massive recall has not yet impacted owners of the brand in other countries, it highlights vulnerabilities in long-term design and quality control.

What Does BYD Offer Against Tesla?

Despite its weaknesses in pure performance and advanced software, BYD has distinct strengths that appeal to a different buyer. The Chinese brand stands out for its use of LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery technology, which is considered safer. Moreover, BYD offers more affordable prices and a longer vehicle warranty. Another key strength is the native integration of traditional connectivity systems like Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, which Tesla does not offer.

In summary, the choice depends on the buyer’s priorities. If the priority is performance, software technology, and charging infrastructure, Tesla is clearly the best option. Conversely, if a buyer seeks a more affordable vehicle with familiar connectivity features and a broader warranty, BYD is more attractive. Nevertheless, the recent recall demonstrates that BYD still has work to do to match the long-term quality and reliability expected in the premium electric vehicle segment.
