Volkswagen ID Polo 2026: the electric model set to lead the urban segment and keep a legend alive
The new Volkswagen ID Polo marks a turning point in the German brand’s electric strategy, combining the legacy of one of its most iconic models with the most advanced technology from the Volkswagen Group.

Volkswagen has been committed to electric mobility for more than a decade, from the pioneering e-Golf to the current ID family. However, with the ID Polo, scheduled to enter production in 2026, the German manufacturer takes a decisive step forward: electrifying one of its most historic nameplates without losing its essence. This model will become the entry point to Volkswagen’s electric range and ensures that the Polo name lives on after more than half a century of history—something essential for the brand’s identity in Europe.
A familiar design and a technological foundation key to the future

At first glance, the ID Polo is unmistakably a Volkswagen. It retains the classic proportions of the petrol-powered Polo, with a compact silhouette, a closed front grille and a cleaner, more aerodynamic body, without following the trend of small SUVs. Built on the new MEB+ platform, shared with the Cupra Raval, this urban electric car is a strategic pillar for the Volkswagen Group, as it will underpin many upcoming small models in an increasingly competitive segment led by rivals such as the Renault 5, the electric Mini Cooper and the Kia EV3.
Beneath the camouflage of the prototype, the influence of the ID 2all concept is clearly visible, driven by CEO Thomas Schäfer and head of design Andreas Mindt as part of Volkswagen’s brand revival. Signature elements such as the robust C-pillar and pronounced wheel arches reinforce a strong sense of familiarity. Technically, the ID Polo features a single front-mounted electric motor with outputs of 114, 133 and 208 hp, plus a future GTI version with 223 hp, figures that promise to restore a sporty edge to the segment—echoing the Formula 1 philosophy of efficiency, control and balanced performance.
Two battery options will be available: 37 kWh, delivering up to 299 km of range, and 52 kWh, capable of reaching 450 km, with fast-charging speeds of up to 130 kW. With a weight of around 1,500 kg, the ID Polo stands out as light for an electric vehicle, resulting in a comfortable, well-insulated and highly stable driving experience. Its longer wheelbase provides interior space comparable to that of a Golf, along with a 435-litre boot, clearly outperforming several direct rivals.
On the road, the ID Polo feels mature and predictable, true to the brand’s DNA. It does not aim to be the most exciting car in its class, but rather the most balanced and usable on a daily basis, a quality that has always defined the Polo. With an estimated starting price of around £22,000, the Volkswagen ID Polo is shaping up to be one of the most complete urban electric cars on the market. Developed and built in Spain, its greatest strength is clear: it is a Volkswagen that feels authentically Volkswagen, even without the sound of a combustion engine—and that could be the key to its success.
