Toyota Surprises the Market: New 2.2 Diesel Engine for the Proace and Proace Verso
The Japanese manufacturer strengthens its commitment to diesel at a key moment, boosting power, efficiency and capability for its most versatile vans.

Toyota once again proves it understands the real needs of each market. While many brands are moving away from diesel, the Japanese company is launching in Germany a new 2.2-liter engine with 150 hp for the Proace and Proace Verso, its most popular professional vehicles. This powertrain replaces the previous 1.5-liter, 120-hp unit, offering greater responsiveness to confidently move these large models while meeting the upcoming Euro 6e emissions standard.
More power, more torque and more capability for professional use

This updated diesel engine delivers a maximum torque of 370 Nm, a key figure for users who operate these vans at full load or need to tow trailers. It can be paired with a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed automatic with a torque converter, providing an optimal balance between efficiency and comfort. Declared fuel consumption starts at 6.6 l/100 km for the manual version and rises to 7 l/100 km for the automatic–remarkable figures considering this variant weighs around 100 kg more than the 1.5-liter version.
In terms of capability, the Toyota Proace continues to shine with a payload close to 1.4 tonnes and a towing capacity of up to 2,500 kg, depending on configuration. The range maintains its outstanding versatility with several body lengths, different side and rear door layouts, and options for single or double cab. In its most capable form, it offers up to 6.6 m³ of cargo volume, while the Verso variant can be configured with up to nine seats.
Toyota has also revealed pricing for our market: the Proace Verso VX L2 with the 150-hp 2.2-liter diesel and manual gearbox starts at €40,900, or can be financed from €655 per month according to the brand’s official configurator. The cargo version, for now, can only be ordered with the 1.5-liter, 120-hp engine, although the arrival of the new diesel unit will give the lineup far greater flexibility.
Another important detail is that all these engines include an AdBlue tank, required to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and comply with the strictest standards. This additive must be refilled periodically–currently priced at around €0.82 per liter–but is essential for keeping emissions under control in intensive, professional use.
