The Sporting Soul of Audi: Celebrating 50 Years of the Five-Cylinder Engine and its Evolution to the 400 HP of the RS 3
Audi commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of its iconic five-cylinder engine in 2026, a crucial engine in the brand’s DNA and key to its rally success with the quattro, whose latest version delivers 400 hp in the RS 3.
In 2026, Audi will celebrate a very special anniversary: 50 years of the five-cylinder engine. This engine enjoys cult status. Furthermore, it is deeply rooted in the brand’s DNA. It was crucial for its slogan “Vorsprung durch Technik.” This engine was first introduced in 1976. It was fitted in the second generation of the Audi 100 (C2). Audi engineers chose it over inline six-cylinder engines. This decision was made due to space constraints and unfavorable weight distribution. The first version, with 2,144 cc, delivered 136 hp. “
The Rally Legend and the quattro Era
The history of the five-cylinder reached legendary heights. This occurred with the original Audi quattro in 1980. Equipped with a turbocharger, intercooler, and permanent all-wheel drive, this car dominated the World Rally Championship. It secured titles in 1982 and 1983. It had a power output of 147 kW (200 hp). Another milestone was the Sport quattro of 1983. It became the most powerful car in history. No German company had offered one like it for public roads until then. It was powered by a new lightweight alloy engine. This four-valve, five-cylinder unit generated 306 hp.
Competition Triumphs and the Modern Return
The highest expression of this engine on the track came in 1987. Walter Röhrl triumphed in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb (USA). He drove the Audi Sport quattro S1 (E2). This racing car developed 598 hp. Then, the five-cylinder was gradually replaced in the mid-90s. It made a triumphant return in 2009 with the Audi TT RS. With 2.5 liters of displacement, the engine generated 250 kW (340 hp). This power unit extended to the RS 3 Sportback and the RS Q3.

Current Power and Lightweight Construction
The current generation, presented in 2016, raised the power output. It reached 294 kW (400 hp) and 480 Nm of maximum torque. Since 2021, the Audi RS 3 has used a modified version of the 2.5 TFSI. It is more powerful than ever, with 400 hp and 500 Nm of torque. This allows the compact sports car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. The maximum speed it reaches is up to 290 km/h. The current engine, known as EA855 Evo Sport, prioritizes lightweight construction. The 2.5 TFSI weighs around 160 kilograms. It is extremely compact, measuring less than 50 centimeters in length.
The Unmistakable Sound and Craft Assembly
The decisive factor in the engine’s cult status is its throaty sound. This is known as the “sound signature” of Audi. Its unmistakable character is due to the odd number of cylinders. The unique firing sequence also influences it: 1-2-4-5-3. This sequence alternates between adjacent and more distant cylinder pairs. Furthermore, the sound is more perceptible with variable control of the exhaust flaps. The assembly of this engine is carried out by hand. Highly qualified specialists assemble the engine by hand at the GyÅ‘r plant in Hungary.
