The Rotary Dream Survives: Behold the Spectacular Family Wagon Inspired by the Mazda Vision-X
Could the station wagon based on the Vision-X Coupe be the only family hauler capable of rivaling the BMW M3 Touring’s cool factor? A vision of how the 503 HP rotary engine could revive the Mazda6 saga.
Mazda always creates beautiful concept cars. The Vision-X Coupe, unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show, proves this. This sleek machine has a low-slung profile. Moreover, it uses an advanced plug-in hybrid system. Its rotary engine produces a healthy 503 HP.
Looking at the Vision-X’s power and beauty, we must wonder: What if Mazda stretched this futuristic coupe? Perhaps it could become a sports wagon.
SUVs now dominate Mazda’s current lineup. The brand discontinued the petrol-powered Mazda6, once available as an estate. However, a new high-performance wagon is exactly what the brand needs. This car would instantly revive its image. In fact, a Vision-X Estate would rival the appeal of the acclaimed BMW M3 Touring.
A Pure Design Estate
The Vision-X design adapts wonderfully to an estate body style. Initially, the concept is quite long. It exceeds the old Mazda6 by 7.3 inches (185 mm). Therefore, designers only need to slightly raise the rear roofline. The vehicle easily transforms into a sporty family hauler.
The renderings by Sugar Design imagine a spiritual successor to the Mazda6 Estate. The design keeps the original concept’s fluidity. Nonetheless, it introduces small, practical changes. For example, the taillights are modified. The concept’s lights extend unusually up the rear window sides. Instead, this wagon version stops the lights at the base of the window. This achieves a cleaner, more classic look.

The Hybrid Rotary: The Technical Jewel
Mazda debuted the Vision-X Concept to preview its next-generation vehicles. The brand aims to release a high-performance rotary engine by 2035. Consequently, the concept provides the best preview of this powertrain.
The system is a plug-in hybrid. It pairs a turbocharged rotary engine with an electric motor. It also includes a small battery pack. Together, they deliver a combined output of 503 HP. Furthermore, it has an all-electric range of up to 99 miles (160 km). This combination of exotic performance and modern efficiency is key. It would differentiate this hypothetical sports wagon.
