The Porsche 911 Goes Hybrid: Is the GTS Proof That the Future Is Not Scary?

By  |

Electrification reaches the iconic nine eleven with a bold T-Hybrid system. The new 911 Carrera GTS proves that power and emotion are not negotiable in the face of regulations.

Many engineer friends say the best innovation emerges under pressure. European regulations forced a radical change at Porsche. The response was a novel hybrid system for the 911. This model demonstrates that hybridization satisfies petrolheads. The 911 Carrera GTS is proof that the automotive future does not have to be scary. Therefore, Porsche responded to a great challenge with an exceptional technological solution.

T-Hybrid Technology: Power and Controlled Weight

Porsche designed a sophisticated yet lightweight architecture for the new GTS. The T-Hybrid system uses a 400-volt battery placed in the front trunk. A 53 hp electric motor couples to the eight-speed PDK transmission. The heart is a 3.6-liter flat-six with twin-turbo. The electric turbocharger also recovers energy for the battery. Incredibly, the GTS is only one hundred pounds heavier than its predecessor.

The resulting output is 532 horsepower and 449 lb-ft of torque. This figure is delivered immediately to the driver. The car accelerates brutally with zero interruption. We feel much more than the additional 59 hp over the non-hybrid Carrera S. There is gigantic torque in the low and mid-range. Moreover, the engine keeps pulling strongly up to 7,500 rpm.

Driving Dynamics: The Rigidity of the Cabrio

In fact, throttle response is instantaneous in Sport Plus mode. Handling is absolutely superb, maintaining the dynamic balance of the 911. Surprisingly, the convertible model feels just as rigid as the coupé. The windows up minimize turbulence during top-down driving. The only drawback lies in the sound, which is less melodic and more metallic than in previous versions.

The suspension offers excellent ride quality for daily use. Only the brake pedal feel is slightly more synthetic than in the Carrera S. Nevertheless, the powertrain is the undisputed star of the model. Porsche responded to regulatory demands brilliantly. The future of sports cars does not have to be a concern for enthusiasts. This GTS is a promise that change can be very good.
