The 5-Door Suzuki Jimny That Shouldn’t Be in Europe: How the 4×4 Icon Has Made a Surprise Return
The iconic Japanese off-roader, withdrawn from the European market due to strict emissions regulations, is back on European roads thanks to parallel importers.
The Suzuki Jimny is much more than a small off-roader — it’s a legend among true off-road enthusiasts. Unfortunately, its latest generation had to disappear from Europe because of the European Union’s increasingly strict emissions rules. For a short time, it survived as a commercial N1 vehicle, but eventually vanished from Suzuki’s official lineup altogether. Now, however, several parallel importers have managed to bring the Jimny back to European soil — even in its five-door version, a model that was never officially sold in the region.
What is parallel importing — and why it’s controversial
Before getting too excited, it’s important to understand what parallel importing means. Unlike official distribution channels managed by the manufacturer’s own subsidiaries, this system allows independent dealerships to import vehicles from markets outside the EU. These cars — like the 5-door Jimny — must go through a homologation process, usually carried out in Germany, where the bureaucratic procedures are faster. However, this process significantly raises the price: once you add transport, homologation, customs, VAT, and registration, the 5-door Jimny ends up costing around €40,000.
Suzuki Germany speaks out against these practices
In Germany, the hub of these operations, Suzuki has publicly criticized the lack of transparency shown by some unofficial dealers. According to the brand, certain sellers misleadingly suggest that the model is officially available, which could confuse potential customers. The reality is that the 5-door Jimny is not homologated for the European market, and its sale is not supported by Suzuki’s official dealer network on the continent.

The same story repeats in Italy and beyond
A similar situation is unfolding in Italy, where parallel importers are offering both the three- and five-door Jimny models — though they are quick to clarify that these do not belong to Suzuki’s official network. When asked for comment by Motor1.com Italy, Suzuki’s response was clear: “Suzuki is aware of the existence of Jimny models not produced for sale in Europe and advises against their purchase due to non-compliance with European market specifications.” In other words, neither the emissions standards nor the safety systems of these vehicles meet EU requirements.
The only realistic option: the used market
For now, the only “safe” way to own a Suzuki Jimny in Europe is through the second-hand market — although finding a 5-door version is nearly impossible. Still, the enduring passion for this compact off-roader proves that it remains a symbol of ruggedness, simplicity, and adventure, even as bureaucracy tries to keep it off European roads.
