Tesla Model Y with 821 km Range: The Reservation ‘Boom’ for the New Long Range (Chinese Version)

By  |

Tesla has introduced a new rear-wheel-drive (RWD) Long Range version of the Model Y in China, achieving an impressive range. The brand seeks to give a new boost to its global sales after mixed results.

Although CLTC cycle values are often optimistic compared to real driving conditions, exceeding 800 km is a remarkable achievement for the Model Y.

The LG Battery Innovation

The key to this impressive range lies in the new battery pack supplied by LG Energy Solution. It is a lithium-ion cell pack with nickel, manganese, and cobalt (NMC) chemistry, allowing for a 78.4 kWh capacity.

It is important to note that this is the same battery that Tesla uses in the 830 km range Model 3 that the company recently introduced, also in the Chinese market.

Strategy to Boost Sales

The RWD Long Range Model Y is offered only in the five-seater version. This decision is strategic, as less weight equates to more kilometers of range. The vehicle is sold at a price of 288,500 yuan, which is about 34,930 euros at the current exchange rate.

Tesla has reported a warm reception from Chinese drivers. Consequently, within hours of opening orders, delivery times for this version increased from 2–4 weeks to 4–6 weeks.

This launch is part of the strategy by Elon Musk and his team to re-energize Tesla sales in China, the second-largest market after the US, and globally. To complement this effort, the company is opening positions in several emerging markets. Furthermore, it appears to be planning a debut in Africa and South America, continents where Tesla’s presence is still very limited.
