Santana Trailmaster 4×4: The Affordable Diesel SUV Everyone Is Looking For
The Andalusian brand unveils a 4×4 SUV based on the BAIC BJ40, with diesel power and true off-road capability, coming to Europe.
Santana introduces its new Trailmaster 4×4, a compact off-road SUV based on the Chinese BAIC BJ40, arriving in Spain as an affordable option within its segment. Measuring 4.79 meters in length, this SUV combines robustness, technology, and off-road performance, following the Andalusian brand’s strategy after the launch of the Santana 400 pickup, available from €29,900 before taxes.
Performance and Off-Road Capability

The Trailmaster is powered by a 2.0-liter diesel engine producing 163 hp, paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission with torque converter and Borg Warner full-time 4×4 system with low-range gear and lockable front and rear differentials. Its off-road specifications are impressive: 37° approach angle, 23° breakover angle, 31° departure angle, 220 mm ground clearance, and 800 mm wading depth, complemented by 11 driving modes to tackle any terrain.
Inspiration and Comparison with Existing Models
Interestingly, the Trailmaster shares its platform and mechanics with the ICH-X K2, already on sale in Spain from €58,500 via DR Automobiles. Both models use the same diesel engine, automatic transmission, and 4×4 system, with an official fuel consumption of 9.7 liters per 100 km. This positions the Trailmaster as a practical, reliable off-roader, competitive against rivals like the Toyota Land Cruiser and KGM Rexton.
Equipment and Technology
The new Santana Trailmaster is expected to feature a comprehensive equipment package similar to the K2: matte paint, 20-inch alloy wheels, rearview camera, removable roof, leather upholstery, and a 12.3-inch multimedia screen. These features make it a modern, comfortable SUV, equally suited for urban use and off-road adventures.
Santana’s Future 4×4 Lineup
In addition to the Trailmaster, Santana will launch a second 4×4 based on the BAIC BJ30, with gasoline engines (245 hp), bifuel (238 hp), and potentially an extended-range electric version. Measuring 4.73 meters, this model will complement the lineup and allow the brand to occupy a niche of affordable off-road vehicles, a segment currently underserved after the disappearance of the Suzuki Jimny in Spain.
