Porsche 718: Next Generation Will Feature Hybrid and Combustion Options

By  |

The next generation of the 718 Boxster and Cayman will not be exclusively electric . The brand is modifying its EV architecture to accommodate gasoline engines .

The future of Porsche’s mid-engined sports cars is becoming more complex. Initially, the next-generation 718 Boxster and Cayman were envisioned as fully electric. However, the brand has pivoted due to market realities. A few months ago, Porsche confirmed that combustion engines would remain in the flagship variants. Now, it appears that the gasoline engine will extend beyond the top-tier versions.

Sources within the Weissach engineering center suggest active work. Porsche is reworking its EV-specific PPE architecture. The goal is for it to support gasoline powertrains. This would give the 718 range a true dual-path approach. Thus, it would blend electric innovation with combustion familiarity.

Complex Engineering and Structural Issues

This “drivetrain reversal” is one of the most radical in Porsche’s history. The internal combustion option will not be limited to the successors of the Cayman GT4 RS. The ICE option will extend across a broader portion of the next generation. Matching the dynamic character of ICE and EV models presents a tough engineering challenge. The PPE platform relies on the battery pack as a load-bearing element. Therefore, without it, rigidity takes a hit.

Porsche engineers have responded to the problem. They designed a new floor structure. They have also implemented significant changes to the rear. This includes a redesigned bulkhead and subframe. Thus, they can house the mid-mounted engine and gearbox. Furthermore, they must figure out the packaging for the fuel tank. Likewise, they must locate the fuel lines and the exhaust.

Potential Gasoline Powertrains

Porsche has several options for combustion engines. One possibility is an upgraded version of the naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine. Previously, this engine featured in the GTS, GT4 RS, and Spyder variants. This engine was reportedly on the chopping block. However, it might be reengineered to meet Euro 7 emissions standards.

There is another speculation around a different solution. Earlier reports pointed to a more compact T-Hybrid system. It would be lifted from the updated 992.2 GTS. That setup combines a twin-turbo 3.6-liter flat-six with an electric motor. This creates a potential bridge between electrification and combustion.

The Combustion Engine Remains at Porsche

Porsche’s combustion-powered future is not limited to the 718. A new gasoline version of the Macan is in the works. It will be sold alongside the existing fully electric model. Both the Panamera and Cayenne are also set to retain their combustion engines. Consequently, the Taycan remains the brand’s only EV-exclusive offering.
