The legendary Toyota Hilux returns with a bolder design, a mild-hybrid diesel engine, and an Eco environmental label, positioning itself to take on the new Santana pickup and the growing wave of Chinese competitors entering the European market.

The Toyota Hilux 2026 arrives tougher and more refined than ever

After leaked images revealed the Toyota Hilux 2026 without camouflage, the Japanese brand has confirmed that its iconic pickup will receive a third restyling of its eighth generation. Although it keeps the same platform and chassis as the current model, Toyota has introduced major design upgrades and new features to ensure the Hilux remains a benchmark in its class. As usual, its debut will take place in Thailand, home to Toyota’s main development and production center for this model.

A stronger and more modern design

The new Hilux features a completely redesigned front end, with a larger rectangular grille, split headlights, and an unpainted lower skid plate that enhances its off-road presence. At the rear, new taillights and a restyled cargo bed provide a cleaner, more functional look. Overall, this restyling gives the Hilux a tougher and more modern image, in line with current market trends while maintaining the durability and reliability that define Toyota.

Upgraded interior technology and comfort

Although interior images have yet to be released, expectations point to a more refined and high-tech cabin, featuring an updated dashboard, improved materials, and a state-of-the-art infotainment system. Toyota aims to combine the Hilux’s legendary toughness with enhanced comfort and usability, catering to both professional users and families who seek versatility and reliability in one vehicle.

Mild-hybrid diesel engine with Eco credentials

Under the hood, the Hilux 2026 will continue to use the proven 2.8D diesel engine with 48V mild-hybrid technology, currently producing 204 hp, with a slight increase in power expected. This setup grants the vehicle the Eco environmental label, a key advantage for urban areas with low-emission restrictions. Additionally, the rear rigid axle with leaf springs and dedicated off-road driving modes –Sand, Mud, Rock, Dirt, Snow, and Auto– ensure outstanding performance on any terrain.

A fierce rival for Santana and the new Chinese contenders

The Toyota Hilux 2026 is expected to be officially unveiled before the end of the year, with prices starting at around €36,000 before tax, targeting freelancers and small to medium-sized businesses. With its updated styling, efficient powertrain, and advanced features, this pickup is ready to go head-to-head with emerging rivals such as the Santana pickup, Maxus T60 MAX, Foton Tunland G7/V9, and KGM Musso. Once again, Toyota proves that when it comes to reliability, endurance, and off-road performance, the Hilux remains the undisputed reference in its class.
