New Mercedes-Benz Vision Iconic: The Coupé That Previews the Future of the Brand
The spectacular German concept redefines classic elegance with futuristic technology and a modern reinterpretation of the brand’s legendary grille.
The Mercedes-Benz Vision Iconic is far more than a design exercise — it’s a bold statement of intent about how the brand envisions luxury, sportiness, and technology in the decade ahead. This sleek, visionary coupé marks a turning point in the brand’s design philosophy. Its defining feature is the new “Iconic Grille,” a luminous, dynamic reimagining of Mercedes’ most recognizable symbol that merges past, present, and future beneath a vertically illuminated star on the hood.
A Design Inspired by the Golden Age of Automobiles
According to Gorden Wagener, Mercedes’ Chief Design Officer, the Vision Iconic pays tribute to legendary models like the W108, W111, and the 600 Pullman, modernizing their proportions and spirit. The silhouette evokes a 1930s dream car, with an endless hood, set-back cabin, and flowing Art Deco-inspired lines. Visually, it looks like a blend between the ’90s animated Batmobile and a piece of futuristic sculpture, with a massive wheelbase and a smoked-glass illuminated grille that transforms light itself into a new design language.
Inside, the Vision Iconic takes a surprising approach by stepping away from the oversized screens seen in today’s Mercedes models. Instead, it embraces visual purity with a slim four-spoke steering wheel, free of buttons, and a dashboard housing the suspended “Zeppelin” glass structure, which integrates both analogue and digital controls. When the long doors open, an animation inspired by luxury mechanical watches lights up the cabin. The interior materials are nothing short of exquisite — mother-of-pearl, polished brass, and deep blue velvet upholstery, all reflecting a return to handcrafted sophistication.

Technology beyond design
Beneath its dazzling form, the Mercedes Vision Iconic serves as a rolling innovation lab. Its smart paint can generate additional energy, potentially adding up to 12,000 extra kilometres of range per year, depending on environmental conditions. Meanwhile, Mercedes is experimenting with neuromorphic computing — technology that mimics the human brain to achieve unprecedented levels of processing efficiency. This system can cut processor energy consumption by up to 90%, while improving the vehicle’s ability to detect signs, lanes, and pedestrians, even in poor visibility conditions.
The result is a prototype that hints at the next generation of Level 4 autonomous driving — smoother, safer, and more human-like. Ultimately, the Mercedes-Benz Vision Iconic stands as both a tribute to the brand’s most glorious past and a window into the future of mobility, where luxury, sustainability, and artificial intelligence coexist under a star that continues to shine brighter than ever.
