Mitsubishi Outlander 2025: Six Months of Testing Reveal the Brand’s Most Complete SUV Yet
After covering more than 4,800 miles from Miami to Alaska, the new Outlander proves that Mitsubishi is back in the game with a balanced, tech-savvy and remarkably comfortable SUV.
After six months of rigorous testing, the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander stands out as the most complete model the Japanese manufacturer has launched in the past decade. Its refined driving dynamics, versatile seven-seat interior, and fuel efficiency position it as a serious contender in the highly competitive midsize SUV segment.
Powertrain and technology that deliver
Under the bonnet lies a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) focused on smoothness and efficiency. Front-wheel drive is standard, while the brand’s advanced Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system is available across the range — and standard on the Platinum Edition — ensuring outstanding grip in rain, snow, or gravel. Its independent suspension performs admirably on both urban tarmac and rural roads, maintaining stability even on long hauls. The cabin insulation is top-notch too, allowing passengers to fully enjoy the Yamaha premium audio system, one of the finest in its class.
Modern, functional and connected interior
Step inside, and the Outlander impresses with its quality materials and ergonomic design. The 12.3-inch touchscreen offers intuitive menus and efficient built-in navigation, while wireless Apple CarPlay adds great value and convenience.
The front seats are generously cushioned and provide excellent support for long journeys, while the third row, though best suited for children, adds versatility to this smartly packaged SUV. Safety is a key focus, with six airbags and a full suite of driver-assist systems, including autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and a 360° camera system.

An extreme journey from Miami to Alaska
During my long-term test — a 4,800-mile journey (7,725 km) from Miami to Alaska — the Outlander showcased exceptional dependability. From snowy passes and rural backroads to mountain routes, this SUV remained composed and confidence-inspiring throughout. Its efficient 2.5-litre engine covered vast distances with minimal fuel stops, averaging 24 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway.
The S-AWC system truly shone on challenging surfaces, delivering flawless traction and stability. Neither the Yukon’s gravel trails nor the Alcan Highway’s steep climbs managed to unsettle it. After this exhaustive test, it’s clear that the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander is a truly all-round SUV, capable of handling everything from daily commutes to epic cross-country adventures.
