McLaren’s First SUV is Coming in 2028: The Hybrid V8 is Confirmed to Rival Ferrari

By  |

McLaren is taking the leap into high-performance, high-riding vehicles. The ‘P47’ will be larger than a Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT and feature all-wheel drive.

The rumor of a high-performance SUV from McLaren appears to be confirmed. According to a new report, the British supercar manufacturer will launch its first high-riding vehicle in 2028. This model will be equipped with a powerful hybrid V8 powertrain. This represents a fundamental strategy shift for the Woking firm.

Secretly Revealed to Dealers

The report, published by Automotive News, cites details from a dealer meeting. This was held on November 11th at the McLaren Creation Centre in Bicester. McLaren executives unveiled a sporty SUV internally dubbed “P47”. Sources who attended described the P47 as a five-seat hybrid. Its proportions are similar to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT, although slightly larger.

The clay model shown rode on 24-inch wheels. One attendee commented that the SUV is “sculpted and muscular.” Therefore, “it will have a real presence and won’t get lost in the exotic SUV segment.” CEO Nick Collins had already hinted at the project in September. He stated the company was developing a vehicle with “more than two seats.”

An Ambitious Roadmap to 2030

The SUV is not the only new model on McLaren’s plan. According to the same report, the automaker has an ambitious product plan extending through 2030. Furthermore, new debuts are scheduled every year until 2028. One of the major launches will be a hybrid coupe producing nearly 800 HP. This car will be powered by a V6 with a mild-hybrid system. This coupe will arrive in 2027.

That same year, McLaren is preparing a final edition of the 750S. Said model will feature a roof scoop and a larger rear wing. Notably absent from the meeting was any mention of the rumored all-electric supercar. Finally, Collins confirmed that a high-performance EV remains in development. However, it is not a near-term priority.
