McLaren, long known for its dominance in the supercar arena and its deep technological ties to Formula 1, is preparing a historic step: the launch of its first-ever SUV in 2028, equipped with a powerful hybrid V8 engine. It’s a strategic move that will forever reshape the brand’s lineup and is already generating massive buzz across the automotive world.

A True SUV With McLaren DNA

According to information leaked from a global dealer meeting at the McLaren Creation Centre in Bicester, the project – internally referred to as “P47” – points to a five-seat high-performance SUV with proportions similar to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT, though slightly larger. Attendees described the design as “muscular, sculpted, and with an imposing presence,” even featuring 24-inch wheels. Everything suggests McLaren doesn’t want just another SUV, but the most radical model in the exotic-performance segment.

The chosen powertrain will be a high-output hybrid V8, a setup aimed at preserving the brand’s performance DNA while embracing electrification to meet global regulations. While McLaren hasn’t yet officially confirmed the SUV for production, the signs are clear: in September, CEO Nick Collins hinted at the development of a model with “more than two seats,” something unprecedented for McLaren.

An ambitious product roadmap through 2030

The upcoming SUV is only one piece of a much bigger strategy. The leaked product plan reveals that McLaren is preparing to launch new models every year until 2028, marking one of the most aggressive product offensives in its recent history. Among them is a hybrid coupé with nearly 800 horsepower, set to debut in 2027 with a mild-hybrid V6, positioning it as one of the most powerful electrified supercars in the world.

That same year, the brand is also expected to reveal a final edition of the 750S, equipped with a roof scoop and a larger rear wing, giving the current McLaren flagship the farewell it deserves.

For now, what was not mentioned during the dealer event was the brand’s rumored all-electric supercar. Although development continues, Collins confirmed it is not an immediate priority, meaning fans of a future McLaren EV will need to remain patient a little longer.
