McLaren Confirms Its First Hybrid Performance SUV for 2028
McLaren is preparing its first series-production SUV, a hybrid performance model codenamed P47, as part of a major £500 million investment in its UK operations.
The investment, equivalent to roughly $675 million, will expand McLaren’s research, development and manufacturing capabilities. It will also support in-house engine production as the company prepares a new generation of hybrid-powered models.
The SUV is expected to arrive around 2028, marking a major change for a brand whose production cars have historically focused on two-seat sports cars and supercars.
McLaren P47 Will Become the Brand’s First SUV
The upcoming SUV is reportedly known internally as P47. Dealer briefings describe it as a four-door, five-seat performance vehicle that will be larger than any previous McLaren designed to carry more than two occupants.
The model is expected to feature a heavily sculpted body and has reportedly been shown to dealers on 24-inch wheels. McLaren itself has confirmed that the vehicle will be a hybrid from launch.

McLaren’s first SUV, reportedly codenamed P47, is being developed as a four-door hybrid performance vehicle for around 2028.
The new SUV will also represent a major shift in McLaren’s manufacturing strategy. Future engines connected to the program are expected to be produced in-house rather than being entirely sourced from external partners.
That change is part of the broader investment designed to give McLaren more control over the development of its next-generation powertrains.
McLaren Wants to Challenge Ferrari and Lamborghini
McLaren is not entering the SUV market with a conventional family crossover. The P47 is being positioned as a high-performance vehicle aimed at the same luxury segment occupied by models such as the Ferrari Purosangue and Lamborghini Urus.
The SUV is expected to be closer in size to a Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT than a traditional compact crossover.

McLaren is targeting the high-performance luxury SUV segment established by vehicles such as the Ferrari Purosangue and Lamborghini Urus.
The business logic is equally important. Ferrari and Lamborghini have demonstrated that performance-oriented utility vehicles can generate significant revenue while maintaining strong links to their sports-car brands.
For McLaren, which operates at relatively low annual production volumes, adding a high-value SUV could significantly expand the company’s business.
A New Hybrid Supercar Is Coming First
The SUV will not be the only major addition to McLaren’s lineup.
Dealer briefings also point to a mid-engine hybrid supercar known internally as P34. The model is reportedly targeting around 810 horsepower from a twin-turbocharged V6 and is expected to launch around 2027.

The P34 hybrid supercar is expected to arrive ahead of the SUV with a reported target of around 810 horsepower.
