Mazda Accelerates its Electric Strategy: A New EV Crossover Surprises During Testing in the US

By  |

Japanese manufacturer Mazda is making a decisive turn in its electric offensive after the withdrawal of the MX-30 in America, with the sighting of a new EV prototype in California.

Mazda’s Electric Transition After the MX-30

Mazda seeks to move past the difficult start of its electric vehicle strategy in America. The MX-30 model, which was exclusively available in California, had a short lifespan. Only 324 units sold in 2022 before its withdrawal. The MX-30, priced at $34,110 in 2023, offered only 161 km of range with its small 35.5 kWh battery pack. Furthermore, it featured suicide rear doors and an electric motor developing 143 hp (107 kW).

First Look at the “Proper” EV Crossover

The first look at the model that could be the company’s “proper” answer has now been captured. The prototype was spied near Mazda’s R&D center in Irvine, California. The test vehicle wears a heavily modified body sourced from the CX-70 or CX-90. The front end features a fully enclosed grille, blocked-off air curtains, and a relatively small central intake.

Adjustments in Architecture and Dimensions

The most significant changes are found aft of the A-pillar. The test mule has a notably shorter wheelbase and rear overhang compared to the CX-90. The third-quarter glass is reminiscent of the CX-80. Although hard to judge from photos alone, spy photographers indicated its size is comparable to the CX-50. A closer inspection reveals the wheels are considerably tucked in. This suggests the final production model will have shorter tracks than the CX-90. Possible aerodynamic rims and a charging port hidden beneath a rear bumper flap are also observed.

The Skyactiv EV Platform and Expectations

Mazda’s future EV will be based on the Skyactiv EV Scalable Architecture. The brand announced it as a dedicated EV platform back in 2021. Initially, it was planned for introduction in 2025 for vehicles of various sizes and body types. However, the original timelines have been delayed. This new model is currently believed to debut in 2027 and arrive in the United States the following year. Therefore, Mazda aims to position itself with a more competitive EV in the key American market.
