Kiwi Edition Basecamp: The 4×4 Camper That Doesn’t Flinch with a Vario Bathroom and Extreme Autonomy

By  |

The Kiwi Edition Basecamp redefines the off-road camper concept by using its own GRP cabin, transforming the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4×4 into a more rugged expedition vehicle.

In the segment of off-road campers based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, competition is intense. However, the Kiwi Edition Basecamp stands out for its uniqueness. The conversion is not based on the classic panel van; instead, it uses its own GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) cabin. As a result, the Sprinter 4×4 projects a completely different presence, looking more like a compact expedition vehicle than a conventional camper van.

The Vario Bathroom and a Versatile Interior

In addition, the Basecamp offers a spacious U-shaped seating area. The Vario bathroom is a particularly notable feature. Unlike other solutions, the sink does not rotate out of the shower area; rather, the Clesana waterless toilet is the rotating element. This way, it creates a large, unobstructed shower area. The Basecamp also features high-quality faucets, a skylight, and an insulated gray water tank.

Electric Supply and Cold Weather Preparation

The Basecamp runs on a 24-volt system. For electric supply, it uses a 200 Ah LiFePo4 battery. A 3 kW inverter and a Victron charging system power the induction hob and other appliances. Likewise, the 160 W solar module and the 1.7 kW shore power connection support self-sufficiency and quick recharging. Furthermore, the lighting concept is dimmable, and the vehicle integrates a smart home module with app control.

Regarding heating, a Truma D4E diesel heater supplies hot air through 3D-printed outlets. The Basecamp is prepared for cold regions. In fact, a 12-liter boiler provides hot water, and a 120-liter fresh water tank along with the insulated gray water tank allow for winter use. Finally, an anti-freeze system protects the Basecamp in low temperatures.

Personalization and Premium Price

One of the Kiwi Edition Basecamp’s biggest strengths is personalization. Furniture surfaces, upholstery, colors, lighting, and even the layout of power outlets are customized in the final design process. With this in mind, barely two vehicles leave the factory identical.

Externally, the setup includes an electric step from Alpha Dynamik and a robust sheet metal cladding. The vehicle features an integrated storage box and exterior stowage hatches at the rear, accentuating its expedition claim. The price starts at €247,500, excluding the Sprinter base vehicle. Therefore, the Kiwi Edition Basecamp is clearly in a premium league in terms of pricing.
