Infiniti Prepares Its Masterstroke: These Are the New Performance Models Aiming to Dethrone BMW M and Mercedes-AMG
The Japanese premium brand wants to return to center stage with a new generation of high-performance models designed to compete head-to-head with Germany’s biggest names.

Infiniti Planning ‘True Performance’ Cars That Rival BMW M
Infiniti, after years of flirting with pure performance –who doesn’t remember the Q60 IPL?– now seems ready to take a real leap into the territory dominated by BMW M and Mercedes-AMG. Until now, its proposals added spice and a bit more power, but never truly stood up to the German titans. However, the Japanese brand wants to return with a far more ambitious offensive, aiming to restore the prestige that has faded somewhat over time.
A Difficult Road Toward the True Performance Elite
In a recent interview with Automotive News, Ponz Pandikuthira, Nissan Americas’ head of product planning, confirmed that Infiniti is working on a “true performance” model –a genuine sports car capable of challenging the top of the premium segment. According to him, the key lies in achieving significantly more power, well beyond what the old IPL badge offered, without sacrificing Infiniti’s hallmarks: comfort, refinement, and design. He summarized the technical challenge perfectly: “It’s easy to add 20 hp… but how do you deliver 50 percent more horsepower while maintaining reliability?”
New Models, New Goals, and a Halo to Restore Prestige
Nissan Americas Chairman Christian Meunier added another crucial element to the plan: Infiniti needs a “halo car”, an iconic model that represents the very best of the brand and inspires customers –just as BMW M and AMG have done for decades with their legendary machines. This car will headline an entire new family of models with genuine performance ambitions.
A Manual Sedan and Powerful SUVs: The Offensive Has Begun
Infiniti has already confirmed that a new high-performance manual sedan –likely the next Q50– is on the way. And the strategy doesn’t stop there: the brand wants to extend this performance line to its SUVs, with the QX65 and QX80 among the top candidates. At SEMA, Infiniti even showcased an experimental QX80 fitted with a Nissan GT-R engine, a bold statement of intent that, while unlikely to reach production exactly as shown, clearly signals the DNA Infiniti wants to inject into future models.
A Future of Japanese Power with Global Ambition
Infiniti’s return to the high-performance arena feels like the start of a revolution. The question now is obvious: can Japan truly challenge Germany’s horsepower empire? If the plan unfolds as intended, the coming decade could deliver a more aggressive, more technological Infiniti –finally capable of staring down the giants of Munich and Stuttgart. And for car lovers –modern, classic, or competition-focused– that can only mean one thing: exciting times ahead.
