A commercial vehicle born to break the rules

Over the past 60 years, the Ford Transit has built a legacy that goes far beyond its role as a work tool. Born in Europe and transformed into the best-selling van on the planet, its success lies in a versatility that has evolved constantly. Its remarkable adaptability has allowed it to tackle the most unexpected challenges, from dense urban environments to scenarios that border on the cinematic.

The Transit’s most astonishing adventures

The Transit’s story is filled with episodes as real as they are unbelievable. In 1965, it transported baby elephants for the London Zoo, while another unit managed to carry 48 students in a single trip. Its agility made it the ideal replacement for rickshaws on the narrow streets of Hong Kong, and its toughness allowed one Transit to operate underground in an English salt mine after being cut apart and reassembled inside the complex.

From land to water, from snow to the desert: a van that can do it all

Creativity around this model has been virtually limitless. In 1985, a floating Transit competed in a raft race, while another one jumped over 15 cars during a charity event. That same year, one unit was buried under five meters of snow and started up again–without issue–six months later. It has also become a monster truck, travelled 12,000 km across the African desert, run on railway tracks in Switzerland, and set an endurance record at Monza by covering 16,000 km at over 118 km/h.

Extreme reliability, unique versions, and impossible records

Its reputation is built on hard facts: one Transit surpassed one million kilometers in real-world use, and development prototypes accumulated the equivalent of 275 laps around the world under extreme conditions. Ford even created a Transit XXL limousine measuring 7.4 meters, complete with seven luxury seats and individual screens. Other unusual versions include a mobile sauna, an off-road motorhome with raised suspension and special tires, and a hovercraft engineered by the Top Gear team. It was even chosen by Prince William and Catherine for low-profile journeys.

An icon that transcends functions and borders

From transporting animals to serving as an executive luxury vehicle, from operating in underground mines to travelling over water or air, the Ford Transit has spent six decades proving that its potential goes far beyond everyday work. Its story is not just that of a commercial van but that of a true symbol of ingenuity, endurance, and versatility, reinventing itself in every chapter of its extraordinary life.
