Ford Recommits to Cars with a Mondeo Facelift for China
Ford canceled its Mondeo midsize sedan in most markets back in 2022. For example, in America, the Ford Fusion was ditched after the 2020 model year. However, China is not like most markets.
The Mondeo’s mid-cycle update includes a rather attractive front fascia. Crucially, it features new headlights that are far more cohesive than the outgoing car’s. The older model displayed chunky, square LEDs for primary illumination, along with hook-shaped accents higher on the fenders. Fortunately, that odd look is gone. Instead, a sleeker, single-unit headlight design integrates an appealing pixelated tri-bar motif. This design is inspired by the Mustang and also resembles Audi for the daytime running lamps.
Additionally, between the headlights, we find yet another evolution of the company’s rounded hexagon grille shape, which is also seen on the Escape. The texture includes chrome bits and bobs to keep things interesting. Likewise, the rear bumper has been reshaped with an edgy design that puts less of an emphasis on the previous car’s faux tailpipes. With this, the brand conforms to the modern trend of hiding one’s greenhouse gases. New wheel designs round out the external alterations. Nevertheless, there is a lot more to appreciate once you open the appealingly contoured doors and step inside.
Technology-Oriented Interior and Mach-E Details
Upon entering, tech-obsessed consumers will find a massive 27-inch plinth for the touchscreen infotainment system. This resides next to a 12.3-inch driver display. All components run off upgraded processors and Ford’s latest software. This ensures crisp graphics and smooth operation.
Ford also endowed the 2026 Mondeo with a few physical controls. In fact, a pair of clickwheels on the center stack provide redundant climate functions. The console design is completely different. It appears to be seemingly borrowed from the Mustang Mach-E. An attractive floating armrest incorporates a pair of wireless phone chargers. Finally, this design resides above open storage around the front passengers’ knees.
Minimal Updates Under the Skin with a Power Boost
Furthermore, apart from the tweaked styling and interior, the Mondeo soldiers into 2026 with the same powertrain lineup: a pair of four-cylinder turbocharged engines under the EcoBoost branding, displacing either 1.5 liters or 2.0 liters. In addition, a hybrid model will be offered.

Power outputs are up slightly relative to the 2025 Mondeo. The base engine goes from 188 horsepower to 193 hp. Concurrently, the 2.0-liter EcoBoost rises from 250 hp to 257 hp. Ford was contacted for clarification on the hybrid engine’s powertrain. Previously, it was a 1.5-liter four-cylinder making 205 hp. Now, it is being reported that the new hybrid is 79 ponies stronger. This suggests the electrified powertrain may now use the 2.0-liter engine as its base.
Ultimately, it’s worth noting that Ford offers only a few sedans worldwide nowadays. These include the Chinese-market Mondeo and its all-but-identical twin, the Taurus sold in the Middle East. Therefore, we presume the Taurus will get the same styling and technological updates as its Chinese sibling. Nonetheless, its powertrain may be tailored to local tastes.
