Ford Kuga Black Package PHEV: Review of a Recommended Plug-in Hybrid SUV
A plug-in hybrid SUV with Zero Emissions label, spacious, well-equipped, and engaging to drive, though it comes with a high price tag. Discover all its details.
The Ford Kuga Black Package PHEV stands out for its design, especially in the ST-Line X trim. The third-generation restyling adds a small splitter, exclusive rear bumper, and diffuser. With the Black Package, black accents appear on the mirrors, front details, and 20-inch wheels, complemented by red brake calipers. Full LED headlights connect via a light strip, while smoked windows and a visible dual exhaust enhance the sporty look. Measuring 4.62 meters long, it fits smartly between compact and mid-size SUVs. Practical details include door protectors and lightweight-feeling handles, combining style with everyday usability.
Interior: Comfort, Technology, and Practicality
Inside, the Kuga reflects a sporty yet refined atmosphere: leather and Alcantara seats, aluminum pedals, and a B&O sound system with ten speakers. The configurable digital instrument panel measures 12.3 inches, paired with a 13.2-inch central touchscreen. While there are no physical climate controls, the digital interface is intuitive. Additional highlights include padded supports for the knees and elbows, a spacious second row with optional heated seats, and longitudinal seat adjustment. The boot offers 395 liters, expandable to 536 liters, with practical touches like a reversible mat and hands-free tailgate operation.
Powertrain and Range: Balancing Efficiency and Performance
The Kuga PHEV combines a 2.5-liter gasoline engine producing 155 hp with a 132 hp electric motor, delivering 243 hp in total. The 10.7 kWh battery provides up to 69 km of electric-only range, though real-world tests averaged around 52 km on highways. Charging is AC only, up to 3.7 kW, taking approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes. Driving modes include Eco, Normal, Sport, EV Now, EV Later, and EV Auto, with real-time feedback on the active propulsion system.

On the Road: Engaging and Firm Ride
The Kuga 4×2 PHEV offers a dynamic feel, thanks to the firmer suspension of the sporty trim. Steering is direct but slightly over-assisted, while brake response starts light and gains firmness as pressure increases. Acceleration during overtaking requires slightly more throttle compared to a pure gasoline or diesel engine with 243 hp, but overall response is smooth. Additional perks include a driver-side mirror with a closer-to-real view and automatic Eco mode activation when entering Low Emission Zones.
Equipment and Price: A Complete Package for a Zero Emissions Label
The Black Package Kuga includes 360° cameras, wireless smartphone charging, electrically adjustable AGR-certified seats, acoustic glass, driver assistance features, and adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go. The PHEV ST-Line X price starts at €49,464, with the Black Package adding roughly €1,000, bringing the total to around €50,500, excluding potential government incentives under Plan MOVES III. The Kuga range starts at €37,196 with the 1.5 EcoBoost 150 hp gasoline engine and Titanium trim, offering a balanced option for technology, comfort, and plug-in hybrid efficiency.
