Fiat 500 Manual Hybrid: The Return of Combustion with Surprisingly Slow Performance

By  |

Fiat has disclosed the mechanical details of its new 500 Hybrid, a model that marks the return of the combustion engine, albeit with performance figures reminiscent of the last generation.

The new Fiat 500 Hybrid uses a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder mild-hybrid engine. This engine is essentially the same powertrain that was fitted to the deceased model. However, power has been reduced to 64 hp (65 PS), down from the previous 69 hp (70 PS). Torque is rated at 68 lb-ft (92 Nm).

The powertrain sends power to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. Acceleration performance is notably slow: the fixed-roof hatchback requires 16.2 seconds to reach 62 mph (100 km/h). Meanwhile, the Cabrio version, which is 44 lb (22 kg) heavier, needs 17.3 seconds. Top speed also decreases, dropping from 104 mph (167 km/h) to as low as 93 mph (150 km/h) on some models.

Enhanced Aesthetics and Body Style Options

Despite the performance limitations, the new 500 Hybrid looks considerably more sophisticated. This is because it benefits from the smoother body and higher-quality interior of the electric 500e. Interestingly, the electric version is up to twice as fast in the 0-62 mph run.

The model is available in both hatchback and Cabrio versions. Additionally, the fixed-roof hatchback comes in two variants. These variants are the conventional two-door hatch and a 3+1 model which adds a rear door on the passenger side.

Confirmed Trim Levels

Although prices and the list of standard equipment have not yet been released, a three-trim lineup is confirmed. The range begins with the basic Pop grade. Following this is the mid-range Icon level, which features more onboard technology. The top of the line is the La Prima, focused on style and luxury.
