The choice between a pure electric vehicle and a hybrid is an ongoing debate among consumers, and durability is a deciding factor. Electric cars boast much simpler mechanics, based on an electric motor powered by a battery. In contrast, hybrids combine the complexity of a combustion engine with an electric system. Although both designs rely on the battery for optimal performance, experts point out that their service lives are very different.

The Electric Car: A Two-Decade Lifespan

The rapid advancement of technology has allowed the lifespan of an electric car to compete with, and in many cases surpass, that of its combustion counterparts. A study by the University of Birmingham, UK, which analyzed millions of records, found that more modern versions offer a longer usage interval. Manufacturers have ensured that these vehicles’ batteries have an average lifespan of 18.4 years, with the capacity to travel up to 200,000 kilometers before significant degradation. This figure matches or exceeds the average service life of combustion cars, which is 15 to 20 years.

The Hybrid Falls Short on Longevity

The story is different for hybrid cars. According to specialists, their lifespan is considerably shorter than that of electric vehicles. The main weakness is their battery, which has a much more limited lifespan, estimated at only 8 to 10 years. Once the hybrid battery completes its cycle, the vehicle cannot survive relying solely on the combustion engine.

Specialized companies in the sector indicate that the electric battery is essential for starting, for the braking systems, and for enabling combined driving. Considering that the battery is a vital component for both types of vehicles, the technology in electric units is superior and degrades more slowly. Therefore, electric cars prove to be more durable than hybrids.
