Chery TX Concept (2012): The SUV That Redefined Chinese Design and Launched a Global Giant
The 2012 TX Concept signified Chery’s stylistic and strategic transformation, marking its ambition to move from a local brand to an international competitor in the global market
Chinese brands are now established as true global giants. Names like Chery are becoming familiar in Europe as well. The speed of this ascent is what’s most surprising. Only ten years ago, changes began that transformed certain manufacturers from local brands into international players.
This turning point for Chery occurred at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show. The presentation of the TX Concept marked a before and after in the brand’s philosophy and style. This was not merely an exhibition prototype. It was a manifesto for Chery’s future design: elegant, bold, and with a touch of Italian style, which was achieved through collaboration with the Turin-based company Granstudio.
Design: Natural Harmony and Minimalism
The TX Concept drew inspiration from water for its lines. Consequently, the surfaces feel soft, almost liquid. The wide wheel arches harmoniously merged with the vehicle’s overall silhouette. The front featured a narrow grille and sharp headlights. The massive proportions along with the long wheelbase gave the concept car a modern, robust SUV vibe.
Inside, the TX prioritized minimalism. A large central screen dominated the dashboard. Furthermore, the cabin was designed to evoke lightness and technology. It anticipated solutions that were later seen in Chery’s production cars.

Technical Performance and Recognition
The TX Concept showcased interesting technical solutions. It was fitted with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This was mated to a CVT automatic gearbox. Power was estimated at about 144 kW (193 HP). Its dimensions placed it in the compact/mid-size SUV segment. It featured generous ground clearance and dynamic proportions that highlighted its crossover character.
This concept did not go unnoticed. It received the ‘Best Concept Car of the Year’ award at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. This recognition confirmed that Chery was achieving a qualitative leap, not only in the domestic market but also in terms of international recognition. The aesthetic language of the TX moved from the exhibition halls. Key elements like the grille, sharp headlights, and muscular lines were reinterpreted in the Chery Tiggo 7. This is the production SUV that now carries the signature of this visionary concept
