Behind the Wheel of the BYD SEAL 6 DM-i: A Remarkable PHEV Sedan

By  |

BYD expands its European lineup with the SEAL 6 DM-i, offering two body styles, impressive range, and innovative plug-in hybrid technology.

Striking Design and Spacious Interior

The BYD SEAL 6 DM-i stands out as a D-segment sedan with sleek, aerodynamic lines. Its sharp LED headlights and narrow lower grille define the “OCEAN X” styling. At 4.84 meters long, 1.87 meters wide, and with a 2.79-meter wheelbase, the cabin is exceptionally spacious, especially for rear passengers. Coupled with a 1.49-meter height and a low drag coefficient of 0.24, the SEAL 6 DM-i combines efficiency and elegance with a subtle coupe-like flair.

Inside, the cabin is minimalist yet premium, dominated by a 15.6-inch central screen, comfortable vegan leather seats, and intuitive controls. The driving position is ergonomically perfect, and the rear seats offer SUV-like space with ample legroom and shoulder width, making long trips comfortable for all occupants.

Powertrain and Performance

As a PHEV, the SEAL 6 DM-i combines a 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle petrol engine (96 hp) with a main electric motor delivering 194 hp and 300 Nm, supported by Blade Battery technology. Depending on the trim, total system output ranges from 184 hp to 212 hp. Top speed reaches 180 km/h, with 0–100 km/h acceleration in 8.9–8.5 seconds. The WLTP fuel consumption is impressively low at 4.4–4.9 L/100 km, while the electric-only range exceeds 100 km and total combined range reaches up to 1,500 km.

Driving Experience

The SEAL 6 DM-i excels on the road with responsive steering, well-tuned suspension, and minimal vibrations, offering a composed and refined driving experience. ADAS features enhance safety and convenience, while the adaptive assisted steering avoids the excessive overboost typical of other PHEVs. Comfort settings, climate control, and media functions are intuitive, although some advanced battery regeneration modes require navigating the large central display.

Features, Trims, and Pricing

BYD offers three trims: Boost (entry), Comfort Lite (mid), and Comfort (luxury). Standard equipment includes LED lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, metallic paint, vegan leather, 8.8-inch digital instruments, 15.6-inch infotainment, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Prices start at €37,000 for the Boost, with incentives potentially reducing the cost to €27,990. Comfort trims rise to €42,000–€43,000, all backed by a 6-year/150,000 km warranty.

Touring Version Expands Versatility

BYD also introduces the SEAL 6 DM-i Touring, a family-oriented variant with identical dimensions but increased cargo capacity (675 liters vs. 491 liters in the sedan) and slightly higher weight. Pricing starts at €38,500 for the Boost, €43,500 for Comfort Lite, and €44,500 for Comfort. This version emphasizes practicality without compromising the performance, comfort, or PHEV efficiency that makes the SEAL 6 DM-i a standout choice in today’s European market.
