The iconic compact sedan could make its return between 2028 and 2029 as a next-generation electric car.

Audi has confirmed that the A4, its beloved compact sedan, will return to the market, this time as an electric vehicle. After the company announced its transition to even-numbered designations for electric models and consolidated the A4 into the new A5, the model seemed destined to disappear. However, Audi assures that the A4 will make a comeback, leading a historic transformation within the brand under CEO Gernot Döllner, who described the project as “the biggest change in the company’s history.”

Platform and Design: The Next Generation

The new A4 will be built on the Volkswagen Group’s Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which has been delayed until 2027 due to software issues. The Audi Concept C offers a clear glimpse of the future design language: sharp lines, a vertical front end, and aerodynamic details that are expected to influence the A4, though the production model will feature full headlights, a larger grille, and practical adjustments for an electric sedan.

Regarding performance, the A4 EV will feature dual electric motors and all-wheel drive, with estimated outputs between 400 and 500 hp for the standard version, and sportier variants potentially exceeding 700 hp to compete with models like the electric BMW 3 Series. Battery details have not yet been confirmed, but it is expected to support multiple capacities, fast charging, and possibly vehicle-to-load capabilities.

Launch and Expected Price

The new A4 is not expected to debut until 2027 at the earliest, with a U.S. release likely between 2028 and 2029. Pricing is expected to range from $55,000 to $65,000, competing directly with electric models from BMW and Mercedes-Benz, and slightly above the new gas-powered A5 and the Q4 E-Tron, maintaining its position as Audi’s entry-level compact sedan.

With this comeback, Audi aims to merge its legacy of compact sedans with electrification and cutting-edge technology, offering an A4 that combines sleek design, sporty performance, and sustainability, ready to shape the next decade in the electric vehicle market.
