Volvo 780 Bertone: The Exclusive Luxury Coupe That is Now a Bargain Investment

The Swedish manufacturer joined forces with the Italian design house Bertone to transform the understated 760 sedan into an elegant Grand Tourer. After decades on the market, this model stands as an accessible collector’s gem with exotic style and top-tier equipment.

Volvo sought to boost its brand image by collaborating with external designers like Bertone to attract high-end customers. The 780 Bertone, launched in 1987, used the robust foundations of the Volvo 760 sedan but with a unique coupe body. Italian designers dropped the roofline by an inch and redesigned the front end to give it a leaner appearance. Despite maintaining Volvo’s boxy proportions, the result was a much more sophisticated and exclusive vehicle.

The 780’s production was limited to approximately 8,500 units assembled directly at Bertone’s factory in Italy. The interior stood out for its extreme luxury, including high-quality leather seating and lacquered beechwood trim. Advanced equipment included electronic climate control, an electric sunroof, and heated front seats with power adjustment. These features positioned it as an extremely comfortable and refined long-distance cruiser.

Balanced Performance and Used Market Value

The Volvo 780 offered turbocharged four-cylinder engines with 188 hp and naturally aspirated V6 options with 145 hp. Power was sent to the rear wheels via four-speed automatic or manual gearboxes. Currently, the average sale price stands around $9,512, making it an absolute steal. Even low-mileage units have recently sold for figures near $6,600 in specialized auctions.

As a more retro alternative, the Volvo 262C Bertone also offers similar exclusivity at very competitive market prices. With only 6,500 units ever built, the 262C is even rarer than its successor, the 780. However, good condition examples can be purchased for values ranging between $8,000 and $12,500. Given their rarity, these models are likely to increase in value as the number of active specimens dwindles.
