Volkswagen revives range-extended hybrids: the electric Plan B for Europe and the United States

The German brand is considering introducing EREV technology in Western markets amid a slowdown in EV demand and a possible revision of the 2035 regulations.

Volkswagen is seriously evaluating the launch of range-extended hybrid vehicles (EREV) in Europe and the United States, a technology that combines electric propulsion with a small internal combustion engine used solely to recharge the battery. According to internal sources cited by Automotive News and Bloomberg, this move responds both to the cooling demand for pure electric vehicles and to the regulatory debate reopening in Brussels over the future of combustion engines beyond 2035.

EREV: the middle-ground solution gaining relevance again

Unlike conventional hybrids, EREVs always drive electrically, with the combustion engine acting only as a generator. Volkswagen has already integrated this architecture into its next-generation SSP platform, designed to be flexible and scalable. The strategic key is to offer a realistic alternative to BEVs for customers still concerned about charging, especially in markets where infrastructure is not advancing at the expected pace.

The political backdrop is decisive. The European Union is accelerating its review of the phase-out timetable for conventional engines, and figures such as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have argued that range-extended hybrids should continue to be allowed after 2035. This view is shared by other major groups: Stellantis and BMW are also assessing EREVs as a smoother transition solution, particularly in higher segments.

For Volkswagen specifically, the roadmap is already taking shape. In the United States, the Scout brand will be responsible for marketing vehicles of this type, while in China–where EREVs are rapidly gaining traction–a dedicated offering is scheduled for launch in the near term. Bringing the technology to Europe will ultimately depend on two critical factors: real market demand and the evolution of public policies and incentives.

The first concrete preview was unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show with the ID. Era concept, developed in collaboration with SAIC. This large SUV is capable, at least on paper, of delivering 300 km of pure electric range and more than 1,000 km of total driving range, thanks to over 700 km provided by the internal combustion generator. A clear statement from Volkswagen: in a time of regulatory uncertainty and consumer hesitation, the electric future may not be purely battery-powered–but also driven by smart solutions that reduce range anxiety.
